What's the thought on split pads please? Not so split that they bleed but we have a shallow split on one front paw and one rear.

I've heard moisturising can be beneficial - if this is so what with?

Any help appreciated

Thanks
Simon

Hiya,

We use otodex cream, it seems to work really well, Sam has had very dry pads a couple of times and a few applications and they healed beautifully. We did have him sitting on our knees whilst it was applied and sunk in though just so he couldn't lick it off!

you can get it in pets@home and lots of other places too.

I used paw wax in the snow last year, here's the link

Works well and it's especially for dogs

All of mine have fairly rough pads with little splits in (not deep). All of my past dogs feet were the same too, so I guess it's pretty normal.

I never moisturise their feet, as I don't want them soft, as it's that layer of tough pad skin which protects their feet from rough ground, sharp stones, thorns, etc.

I do however try to avoid walking them on salted/gritted surfaces, but if I have to, then their feet are rinsed off as soon as I get home, because salt/grit makes their feet and nailbeds very sore.

LF does it again. Wink Wink

Whilst Lexi was passed out on the sofa earlier I noticed that her pads were as rough as I had ever seen them, or any of my previous dogs for that matter and one has a deeper crevice. Only front feet, backs are fine.

We cover all sorts of surfaces when we are out walking from pavement to shingle, woodland and beach (chesil beach is soft pebbles).

This week we have been walking Weymouth Beach(sand / shale) in the mornings - it is too dark to walk the woods at 7.00am and I have needed to be at work a bit earlier. Lexi has had a ball but I wonder if the increased Salt and Sand + wave surfing is just a bit too much. She is very heavy generally on her front feet when she plays and does have to stop and dig at least half way to Aus before we can leave. She isn't fussing, they don't look sore, and I agree with Jules that I would she had "tough" feet as oppossed to "soft" feet.

Some people suggest Vaseline or Pad Wax. Any thoughts please.

xx

I've put paw wax on Luna's when they were particularly rough (ie: grazing my face when she pawed me awake in the morn!) and Vaseline too. Both seem to have helped the deep cracks become shallower cracks HOWEVER, Luna likes the taste of Vaseline..... Rolling Eyes

Actually on reading your post again I see you wanted thoughts on split pads Very Happy

Dylan's pads are fairly rough and hard and do have little splits in them but they don't bother him at all. So I leave well alone cos like Jules said above I think being too soft would be worse.

In the snow I put paw wax on to protect but even with that on I do my best to avoid him walking in any salt or grit.
