Hi folks....lovely topic...we have a 13 wk old black lab. We have tried several foods...we've tried soaking it, feeding him it dry, putting a little milk in it. We have just tried giving him adult dog food as recommended due to puppy food being high in protein but he has been pooping chocolate milkshake since!
Any ideas, tips or recommendations will be greatly received!

Aww poor pupster!

When did it start? when you got him or after changing his food? When changing foods are you gradully over course of a week bringing in the new food?

Id stop feeding him dog food at all for a few days and give him Boiled chicken and Rice little and often. If the problem has been persistant have you taken him to the vets?

Mine are on Arden Grange puppy/ Junior for large breeds and are doing great on it!

Hiya,

It might just be all the changes and variations that have made him loose. I'd stick with one food for now and give it a couple of weeks to see how he fares. You might also be feeding too much - overfeeding will give him the runs.

Work out what he should get based on his weight and then split that into 4 meals. Anything you give for training treats during the day, deduct that from his overall allowance.

Wormers and vaccinations can make them a bit loose too.

Keep an eye on him (check gums and scruff) to make sure he's not dehydrated as pups can dehydrate fast if they've got the runs.

Choose a good quality puppy food (if you're looking at mid-price range I would go for something like Burns) and buy/order some pro-biotic paste such as Promax (I think there's one called Entonox too) to add into the food for 5 days or so.

It can take some pups a while to adjust to a food and if you keep switching, this can make the gut even more sensitive, and with a constant stream of differing ingredients to cope with, the gut flora doesn't get a chance to get balanced.

If your pup is one of the 50% of dogs who are lactose intolerant, the milk won't be helping.

Have you spoken to you vet about this?

Thanks for the replies everyone. When we picked him up from the breeder he was on soaked Gusto puppy food which we can't find in the shops. Then one day he was having watery poos with blood in so he went on antibiotics and just weetabix and milk for a week and then started gradually bringing him onto puppy food (tesco premium) and still not a great consistency. Were now trying him on gusto adult as recommended but he's now extremely runny and naturally he's drinking buckets full of water because if it. We can't seem to find a happy medium Sad

where can you get this probitic stuff to put in his food?

My vet told me live yoghurt is just as good.
I mix it with dry food for Cody's breakfast every morning

I think it might be worth stopping feeding him dog food for a few days, as Mo said all the changes might be what's upsetting him.

If you can get him having solid poos after a few days of chicken and rice, then it'll be time to think about introducing a different food but stick to it. Many on here feed Skinner's. They have a hypoallergenic version and it's also VAT free because it's a working dog food. You can also get James Wellbeloved which is rated on here but it's double the price of Skinner's.

It could be that he has a wheat intolerance, many dog foods have wheat in them, or the milk could be causing an issue as Lizi mentioned.

Start him off nice and simple, some cooked chicken breast and some rice. Feed him this over 3-4 meals for 2-3 days. You should start seeing a difference. If he continues to be loose after 2-3 days of chicken and rice, then you need to get him seen by a vet.

My pup has had diarrhoea problems recently.

She was fed James Wellbeloved, but was having extremely loose stools with blood and mucous in them.

Vet prescribed antibiotics/anti-inflammatories and Protexin to bung her up, and to feed chicken and rice for 5 days. Started introducing her food again and she went loose again.

I've now changed her onto Wainwrights Salmon and Potato food from Pets At Home, and she's solid and putting weight on again.

Just to let you know by first dog Molly was allergic to chicken and it gave her very very runny poo.

We only found out when she had a normal upset tum and the vet said to feed her chicken and rice, the situation went from bad to worse.

Eventually twigged what it was, found a food that she liked and stuck to it.

Hope you get things more solid soon.
