diarrhea in puppy...

Hey people Im a newbie..

Had my puppy about 2 weeks now. He seems to have an on/off diarrhea problem. Some are leaky and some are solid. This is strange and Im looking for more info on what it could be.

Puppy is about 10 weeks, hes fed on CSJ That'll do. He get pre-packed pigs ears as treats.

Hes had 1 vaccination and is due his 2nd in 2 days time.

Like I said one outing out the back can result in diarrhea and the next the poop can be solid. There are no visible signs of worms etc within the diarrhea. He is totally playful and I have no worries that this is bringing him down.

I have added pics and see if you can say/see of any probs and any help is truly gratefully appreciated.

Welocme to LF - Brunot is SUCH a sweetie gorgeous pup.

I am a real novice myself and suggest you search other threads for similar cases for immediate suggestions. Also have you informed your vet? Its worth doing that too just in case. I know dehydration can occur very easily in such a young pup too when they are producing runny stools.

I am sure others on here can offer you some advice as there are a few pups with similar problems but I would suggest talking to the vet too.

this can be caused by lots of things, many of them not serious.

including:
1) feeds are too large
2) dog eating stuff it shouldnt
3) reaction to innoculations
4) reaction to worming tablets
5) change in feed
6) intollerance to feed ingredient
7) change in water (i.e. from breeders area)

bacterial infection
9) virus
10) colitis
the list goes on and there are more serious things too.

The more serious the problem, you would usually get other symptoms i.e. temperature, sick, listless, shaking etc. in your case could be any of above, but because you say things one day are fine the next are bad again I would recommend going back to basics.

cut out any foods/treats other than his feed. dont allow him to ingest anything other than his feed, i.e. be very attentive and supervise all time outside especially. ensure his daily feed quota is fed in small regular meals (about 4-5 is normal at that age). Soak the food in water to soften it before eating, make it easier to digest, and help keep hydration up.

The critical things at this stage are he has water available to drink at all times, and his weight gain is ok. it is important just like a human baby you monitor his weight once or twice a week to ensure he is thriving. typical gain is in the region of .5 to 1Kg per week.

if the runny poos become every day and you dont get solid for 48 hours then as long as he is thriving and has some body fat I would starve him totally for 24 hours, then feed fish, scrambled egg, steamed chicken, and rice for 24 hours, then back onto his feed. If things persist for over a week then its the vets. (all this assumes the problem is just runny poos and no other problems.)

NO he's actually a good pup. I worked night shift last week so this kind of mucks up my system... Rolling Eyes

1) feeds are too large - NO more than a small coffee cups worth 3 x a day
2) dog eating stuff it shouldnt - Only eats CSJ or PIGS ear treats
3) reaction to innoculations - Only had one nearly 2 weeks ago
4) reaction to worming tablets - Not been done since bought about 2/3 weeks ago. Due to be done again by vet on Mon
5) change in feed - Feed was changed few days after being bought from Chudley's puppy food to CSJ Thatll do.
6) intollerance to feed ingredient
7) change in water (i.e. from breeders area)

9) virus - UNKNOWN
10) colitis - UNKNOWN

Hes due his 2nd vaccination on Monday so will try to get him weighed. Hes also going to get wormed. Will ask the vet what he thinks. If it goes on think I will cut out his CSJ meals and try him on purely Chicken/rice or scrambled egg for a day or 2 to see if this cures the runs.

He doesn't seem skinny too me and this runs certainly aint putting him off his feed and I was playing with him @ 6am this morning running around the living room... Laughing

First thing I would say is if the bout of dioareah lasts more than a couple of days then I would get down to the vet, simply because pups become dehydrated quite quickly.

Secondly, does the food you feed him contain Wheat? This can cause an intolerance in some pups and Labs are paticularly prone to Wheat intolerance.

Cut out the Pigs ears too, then slowly re introduce once motions are back to normal, however IMO I would say he is porbably a little too young for these at the moment.

If I was you I would starve him for 24 hrs but leave plenty of water, this means no treats at all, then introduce a bland diet of rice and chicken or rice and scrambled egg. If no change then again I would call you vet.

When Leo was that age, he was beginning teething and this can cause diarrhea. He would also eat things he shouldn't such as sticks in the back garden, pick up leaves etc. Puppys put absolutely anything in their mouth, outside or inside, whatever they find goes into the mouth at that age. This can also cause upset stomachs, and happens with most puppies at that age.

What is an ideal weight for a "SUPPOSED" 11 week old puppy, I say supposed because from looking at other weights to age ratios my puppy seems under weight but yet looks/feels/acts perfectly normal.

Im just wandering wether or not he is the age the breeder said he was.

So for a 11 week old pup roughly how heavy? Also do you guys/gals think he looks 11-12wks old?

He's off to the vet tomorrow for his 2nd vaccination so will query vet then.

Have you asked his breeder for advice?

It could just be that his little tummy has been used to one food from about 3 weeks, so most of his life so far. If you've changed this then it may take a little bit of time for his system to get used to it. It is always worth letting any new puppy settle in for a few weeks before changing their food, as leaving their littermates and familiar surrounding is difficult enough.

Is there any slime or blood in the poos?

Just out of curiosity, did you get your puppy in Ayrshire? From a town beginning with P?

Id say he looked 11/12 weeks old yep.
As for weights, everyones pups are different weights.
At around 14 weeks old Leo was about 13/14kg... can't remember how much he weighed at 11/12 weeks of the top of my head, but would probably have been just a little less than that.
But weights vary greatly from pup to pup.
