This month, we have nominated a very special Labrador called Bess, to be our ''Lab of the month'' . I think you''ll all agree, Bess is one very special lab, her story has definately touched our hearts. Here, her owner, Wendy Preston explains why:
Wendy writes:
"We have only owned Bess for a year but you would think I had her from a pup the way she is with us. I heard of Bess''s plight from a breeder friend. Her owner could no longer look after Bess. Previously Bess had been used to breed but all 10 of her pups had died inside her and she had to have an emergency caesarian section, then she was spayed.
She was no longer useful and left to live the next 4 years in a shed with no exercise and no human companionship. She lived with 3 other Labs who went to another breeder, but no-one wanted Bess.I met Bess and was shocked at the state of her.She looked about 12 years old,but she was only 6, she was grossly overweight and seemed very sad, and I cannot describe the smell, but her big brown eyes melted my heart and I immediately knew she was the dog for me. I took her straight to the vets and he did not think Bess would survive because of her weight. We also realised that she had been abused physically and her tail had been broken. I took her home and showered her, the hair fell off in clumps but something changed. Her tail began to wag and her eyes lit up. Now bess is at her ideal weight and is reliving her youth. She is always full of energy and pleased to see everyone.
When I had Bess i was off work with depression as I had recently lost my Dad, but Bess brought me back to life and I dont know what I would have done without her. Bess has also brought my partner and I closer together as we now have something positive to focus on. Bess now works with me in a school for children with special needs, she has become a regular member of staff and the children always look forward to seeing her. She has helped children overcome their fear of dogs in a way that no human could. Recently she helped another scared rescued dog overcome his fear of other dogs. She is loyal and loving and always by ny side, she truly is special.I only wish my dad could have met her."
