Im considering fostering for Many Tears rescue, my only worry would be giving the dog up when he/she finds their new home..... What if i cant? Just how hard have others found it? Are there any here who DIDNT end up letting one go??
Thats my biggest worry!!!! Since having Pippa (my ex puppy mill breeding cavalier) ive really wanted to help and im not just saying that i really do want to DO something. But i know if i had to give Pippa up now- ive had her two weeks- I just couldnt. Will i have that too strong bond every time?
You could always do a foster for life for an oldie that perhaps might find it difficult to find a forever home?? Or for a dog that has medical problems - vet fees and other costs are covered by some of the rescue organisations.
I don't foster for that reason so I am no use but Oldies Club has managed to rehome lots of dogs, so *some* foster homes do part with their dogs Lots "fail" too, meaning plenty of oldies get to stay in their very first, very lovely foster homes for the rest of their lives - so a success rather than a failure really
Foster for Oldies, oldies have so very much to offer & if you where to fail although yes it can be hard work it is also very rewarding & although homes can be found for oldies id say its much harder than finding a home for a fit young dog,
Jess out foster bullmastiff came to us for what was mean to be a month & well shes still here bless her 4 months later,
Yes i have failed, three times, but out of around 60 - 70 its not bad ( the rest i found in rescues and knew i wanted them such as heidi and skye)
I wont lie and say giving them up is easy because it isnt, and i have always say if you detatch your selves from your foster dogs then your not doing your job correct.
BUT what is the most rewarding part is seeing a frightened dog start to come out of their shells then a few weeks later that email you get from the new owners saying their new dog is the best thing in the world.
If you do fail most rescues will welcome the fact, they know the dog has ended up in the best home possible.
I still do a bit of fostering when i can but my house is near bursting point at the moment and having a pup she takes up a lot of time.
I know Kevin at many tears will welcome your call, and they do have some wonderful dogs needing foster homes.
Etited to say feel free to pm me in have any questions
Thanks Den!!! I was waiting for your reply!!! I am going to phone tomorrow, we could foster the lab sizes which i know they need. Will it matter that i have 3 young kids? They are good with the dogs though, mostly they leave the dogs alone- what i mean is they are not harrassers!!! I feel nervous to phone tomorrow - feels like a job interview!!!!
Is your landlord ok for you to foster? I think it was you that had to rehome your new puppy recently because of the landlord? Just wanted to mention that as it is something I check if I am doing a home visit for rescue and they are in rented accommodation Not sure how all rescues work but when I adopted and lived in rented accommodation I had to get a letter from the landlord to show the rescue.
Good luck, I have huge admiration for those that foster.
