Gentle readers,

I need to acquire 2 collars for Jasper and Loki. I have always been a fan of leather. They won't be wearing them when in they're in the crate just out and about (obviously). I have read the last few posts about the Dublin collars but to me they look plasticky. May I ask which is better?
A Dublin or a leather one? Both boys are microchipped and I was going to get 2 tags with just surname, tel # and post code on is this still alright?

Many thanks

Emma

Corbie's Dubin collar is the best thing I've ever bought, but I can't compare it with a leather one as he's never had leather.

It's not cheap plastic, more a plastic/rubbery material. Difficult to explain. It's thick, durable and ideal for any dog who loves water/mud, etc. It's been perfect for Corbie, the last few days have been muddy and I've just wipped it clean and of course it doesn't get soaking wet or stink.

It's been tested against fox poop, and it was easy to wipe off and didn't pong after.

I just wish I had got it before I went on holiday, as I had to take two collars with me and keep drying them off and swapping them over.

I'm not one to spend money on collars, but the Dublin was a great investment for me.

the only reason i succumbed is 1) after reading about them on LF 2) as Carly only has to see water and gets wet and finally 3) her other collar (not leather but thick fabric) was geting unbelievably smelly (and she doesnt roll in fox poop....

and I agree its not plastic as such, and carly seems to like it Smile

The one and only catch with a Dublin is if your dog is a puller, there is a certain amount of give in them. Other than that, they really are the dogs danglies!

The double dangle is that as well as being practical, they actually look pretty damn cool too Smile

I personally prefer the look of a good quality leather collar, which matches the dog (so Black on Black, etc) and for years this is all I ever had. However, leather rots when it is constantly being dunked in puddles, ponds, the sea, etc....and you are forever having to scrub it if you have a "roller". It takes ages to dry out properly too, so often my dogs would end up having to wear a damp collar (or a stiff one if it had dried). I tried the nylon/cotton type collars but although they were easier to wash, they got stinky soooo quickly amd I'm not a fan of Clip collars having had a couple snap on me, I much prefer the safety of a decent buckle.

Dublin Dog collars can be a bit lairy on the eye, especially some of the brighter colours but they are the ultimate in practical. Nothing stains them and fox poo just rinses off....they are dry on seconds and they have a good sturdy buckle. The only thing I would be wary of is if you have a chronic puller, as I have heard that they can stretch a bit (mind you so does leather) but I've never had that problem with mine. The other good thing about them is that they are kind on the dog coat.....no rough edges and nice and smooth inside, so you don't get broken hairs or sore skin round their necks.

Mine have Dublin Dogs for everyday "Fun" but for going out somewhere special, they have a leather "posh" collar. Wink

Both mine have choke chain collars with id tags showing surname, house number, postcode and phone number.

I like the look of polished chrome against Paddy's black fur and Sadie looks like the lady mayoress in hers.

There's no problem with fox poo, rotting, stretching, cleaning.....etc

oh and they're not expensive either for bling!

I like the look of a shiny chain but I would worry that mine would hang themselves as they belt through the undergrowth. I worry enough that they will snag their ordinary collars (because they have a couple of times) but if they were wearing a choke chain, it might be too late by the time I got to them.

I was thinking of getting a second collar for when Cadbury is doing agilty, I had been considering a Dublin collar but was concerned about the catches.

Do I take it they actually have a buckle rather than one of those snap clasp things?

If so I may just get one before his next training session.
