A scrub in warm soapy water and a soak in hot water if its really bad. Haven't put it in the dishwasher yet, haven't really had the need. No need for sterilising...Cadbury's tum can cope with a few normal germs...otherwise, he'll go all soft on you! I ate worms, mud, all sorts when I was little and apart from mild hayfever, i aint allergic to anything....so didn't do me any harm
The old saying was, "You have to eat a peck of dirt before you die!"
That was my old Nans favourite saying . She raised 8 children in a tiny house with very little money. I'm sure they all ate more than a "peck", yet they were all revoltingly healthy.
btw, soil is full of minerals, so if a child starts eating it there's probably something missing in the diet.
I know, because my auntie when a child used to eat mouthfuls of dirt from the garden, the doctor recommended to her mum giving it to her for tea on a plate to put her off.
lol eeewwww licking dirty fingers is one thing, having it served on a plate is another lol but then, as kids, we rolled around in the dirt, spent all our spare time outside in the fresh air, unlike some kids i know these days....but not all I'm pleased to say....any kids of mine will be 'outdoorsey', whether they like it or not Mud pie anyone?
There is a type of bacteria in certain soil that can actually promote feelings of wellbeing, which is why you feel good when gardening sometimes, its this bacteria getting in your system.
On the other hand, my bruv was talking with a nurse who once treated a man who had a pocket-like hole developing in the soft tissue around his backside. The cause was a bacteria found in soil, he must have been gardening or something and stopped to pull up his trousers and the bacteria worked its way under the skin and was eating him.
I think that's highly unusual though - hasn't put me off gardening!

I think there is one in my garden which give you a bad back after gardening!
