God, I feel so stupid right now. I consider myself a responsible dog owner, yet I have no idea what to do next!!

I found a white German Shepherd bitch wandering a country lane a couple of hours ago. She is very very skinny and had been rolling in all things unholy, but her paws aren't in too bad shape and her nails are in pretty good nick, so I don't think she's been out too long.

The dog warden had already gone home (god I hate this new system!! What are we supposed to do out of hours??). I couldn't take her home, no matter how much I would have loved to, because to me she is an unknown quantity - I have no idea of her vaccination status, or how she is around other dogs, and with two dogs at home, one of which a small pup, I couldn't risk bringing her back with me, as much as that broke my heart. She was just gorgeous!!!

I did take a photo but on my camera phone and now I have absolutely no idea how to get it off my phone and onto my puter! D'oh!! New phone and cannot find the box, and therefore the installation CD.

So I popped down to the Animal Welfare Trust farm nearby and they agreed to take her for the evening and call the dog warden in the morning to come collect her. We scanned her and couldn't find a chip, but I forgot to look if she was tattooed, god how dumb am I? It just didn't occur to look. No collar therefore no tag. Gosh I hope she has owners she's so lovely.

I'm going to call the dog warden tomorrow and find out where she's gone, I'd love to hear that she's been reported missing and is reunited with her owners tomorrow morning. But in case that doesn't happen, if she's still unclaimed in 7 days time then I'm already starting in on hubby about fostering her Very Happy

I stayed at the Trust farm to help her settle in a while and we gave her a bowl of water and she slurped the whole thing she was soooooo thirsty! Poor baby.

Okay, I know she's not a lab, but what do I do now?? Who else should I contact?? I know there must be a million websites and other rescue groups to cross-post to, can someone point me in the direction of them so I can post about her anywhere and everywhere in the hope that if she is a poor lost pup with a Mum & Dad out looking for her, then maybe it might help them find her.

Cheers

Ness

What about ringing around all the vets and also the local police stations and informing them that you have found a dog? If I'd lost my dog then they would be the first places where I'd ask, other than the dog warden. I think there is a 'Dog Lost' web site, so you could post on there.

Ummm.....what about attaching some flyers to the lamp posts or fences near where you found her? Don;t put too much detal about the dog though, otherwise someone who is not her owner could try and claim her as theirs.

I'm sure others will have more helpful advice.

Ness, well done for helping her.

Doglost is a well known/well used lost dogs website: http://www.dogslost.co.uk - unfortunately the site was hacked a while back and they've had real problems but it is up and running again even though it's not quite looking as it was.

You could phone the local police station - I know they're no longer dealing with strays, some might still hold details of dogs reported missing I guess, worth a try?

Not sure what phone you have, but on mine I'm able to add an email address as a contact - so I have my own name set up as a contact on the phone and have added my email address under that. I try to get my hubby to Bluetooth photos to his computer as it's free then, but otherwise if I select to send a photo by MMS and then just select the contact with the email address, it works, I just have to pay to send the photo. I think it has to be a contact on the phone rather than the SIM as the SIM doesn't take email addresses.

If that doesn't work on yours, I can PM my mobile number and then add the photo to this thread for you.

Hope there is a good owner out there looking and if not that the dog can find a new home.

Could you pop her to your vet to see if she is chipped?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!!! Already done DogLost, but their new site means all "found" dogs have to be approved by a site admin - I have submitted it but it hasn't been approved yet Smile

Joanne, you must have missed the part in my post where I said we have already scanned her and we couldn't find a chip.

Off to find a phone number for our local police station. Becs, signs on the lamp posts might not work as there's no lamp post for about 3 miles Very Happy But I will make up a sign for the village shop and pop it in the window tomorrow.

If anyone knows of any other website or forums etc which I should post to, would love to know!!

cheers,

Ness

PS Angela, I might take you up on that tomorrow - I have no mobile phone access in my house though so I can't send it to you tonight will have to be tomorrow when I go to work. Sometimes living in the country sucks Sad

you could try germanshepherdrescue.co.uk to see if they have any reports. Also white and long coat german shepherd society. The secretary may have had a report of a missing dog. If not, she could send an email out and maybe help with locating owners.

Ness, could you let me have the details you gave to Doglost and I will post them on a rescue forum I use? One of my friends is a doglost coordinator so I'll check with her they got the details ok too. Could you include a contact no for the Animal Welfare Trust place? Thanks Smile
