A foster or permanent home in the East Midlands is being sought for Murphy by Labrador Rescue East Midlands (contact Harry Cook on 0115 921 3785).
Murphy is an entire yellow male aged between 5 and 6. He is friendly and loving - lives with children (youngest is two), another dog, cat and small furry.
Murphy is a gorgeous dog and loves fuss and affection, plays nicely with his doggie brother and is great with the children in the family. He is a very lovely chap who I have had the great pleasure of meeting today.
Unfortunately Murphy has diabetes and his family are not able to afford to pay for his care - he has been with them for just a few weeks. This is not a put to sleep situation, but obviously a prolonged stay in kennels would be very distressing for Murphy, which is the last thing a dog with this disease needs.
It is not known as yet whether his diabetes has stabilised and a further blood test will take place next week. The family have agreed to keep Murphy for a couple of weeks to give the Rescue time to find a suitable fosterer.
Any potential fosterer needs to be aware that it is likely Murphy will be with them for quite some time whilst a permanent home is sought by the Rescue, unless a miracle happens. He needs a special diet and a strict routine of exercise and insulin injections. He is currently being injected twice a day at 8am and 8pm.
A long term foster home in the East Midlands (preferably Nottingham area) is sought as Lab Rescue EM like to regularly visit their fosterers. All vet bills will be covered by Rescue and transport to foster will be arranged. Any potential fosterers will be home checked by the Rescue.
Finally, I would add that the only reason Murphy is not coming to me for fostering is that I already have my hands full ! If I have missed off any vital information please ask as this is my first ever request for help.
Oh he is such a lovely boy, I do hope he finds a forever home soon
Would it not be possible for fundraising to be done that would allow the vet costs to be covered and allow him to stay with his family and save the poor boy the upheaval, I would contribute to such a cause and i am sure many others would too. Sorry, probably me being too unrealistic as usual
Thats a lovely idea Linda and thank you very much for your kind offer (Harry may well take you up on that !)
It's a very new problem for the Rescue as it's the first diabetic dog that has come in and because Murphy is still not stabilised it's difficult for the Rescue to assess how much money would be needed.
My old labbie also had diabetes, but our vets at the time were useless and so I can't really be of much help advice wise.
I think as he is already in a home where he is loved it would be nice for him to stay where he is loved
I did mean I will contribute to fundraising, if i had the money I would cover them all myself but I also have 3 dogs to insure/feed and vet fees, if you set up a paypal account it would allow people to contribute what they could and maybe help the dog and his family
Wendy, have a look under LLR volunteer database, there are a number of offers on there
I have a lovely Lady in Ipswich who is homechecked to foster she has 4 year old daughter who has CP, but she is free and has space at the moment

Thanks Nat - I think Harry is hoping to get someone a little nearer as he likes to call in every couple of weeks to check how things are going with fosters. I know that seems like asking the impossible. Ordinarily he'd have come to me, but I'm full for the foreseeable future.
I'm going to search the health forum to see if I can find anyone with up to date info about the likely costs involved with a diabetic doggie.
Wendy, I believe JohnW is very knowledgable on the subject

Peter & I have a diabetic dog Joshua his started when he was 7 he is now 9 and stabilised on two injections per day he has three meals a day. We buy his insulin on the Internet because it's a lot cheaper half the price all you need is a prescription from the vet which is free. Approx cost of insulin is about £40 per month. We were initially using special diabetic tins of dog food which were very expensive but again can be bought cheaper on the Internet. However we now have him on Winalot roast chicken and mixer three small meals per day which seems to be as good as the diabetic food and is the normal cost of feeding a dog. Unfortunately Joshua went blind because of the diabetes which is heartbreaking but he copes very well even though we lost our other dog a few months ago. This boy looks very much like Joshua and we wish him all the luck in the world. I think starting a fund is an excellent idea.
Loads of hugs to Murphy.
Jean, Peter and Joshua. L.R.R.S.E.
i would love to foster him but sadly at the moment my house isn't big enough
i have spoken to my OH and if there could be a donation account set up on paypal we would be more than happy to help as much as we could so that murphy could stay with his family
if enough people were willing to pay a couple of quid a month then im sure that would cover his medical bills
Thanks for all the offers - it's really touched me to know that people will help if called upon.
The Rescue are appealing in the local paper for a new home for Murphy so hopefully someone will come forward who is able to take him on "warts and all".
The diet information is really useful Jean, thank you. Hope Joshua continues to thrive. My own boy never got used to being blind unfortunately and it broke my heart everyday to watch him.
