Hello there

my name is Jean, and i have after many years of owning border collies purchased an adorable 11 week old black labrador who is named Nimrod.
He is extremely laid back and relaxed, fine with our three cats and coming along well with house training etc.. I was wondering however is it normal for a labrador puppy to sleep so much, he sleeps for 18 hours a day, and is a lazy boy.. he is bumbling about the garden and having about two 20 minute walks a day.. question is, after being used to Border Collies who are on the go all the time, I suspect that I am worrying about nothing.

hi jean welcome to LF

and welcome to little nimrod

there is a 5min rule concerning lab pups and there walks and that is

5mins for every month of there age so really nimrod is getting to many walks he should only be on 10-15mins Wink

i would say border collies are very live wires on the go all the time so compared to labs yes very different labs are a tad more laid back..lol..

well whatever the breed, puppies are just like babies they sleep majority of there day and only require small amounts of activity till they are around 3.5-4 months old.
as they get older then, just as human children, have longer spurts of energy and can be awake longer, playing, walking etc etc...
18 hours a day doesnt sound all that out of the ordinary for adult dogs either, majority of dogs spend there days snoozing unless the owners are active in alot of things such as flyball, agility, obedience...OR you are a stay at home type of person that either works from home and/or has a OH that works so that u have more time to spend doing special things with your pup.
I too would love to see pictures of your new pup! cant wait Smile

Welcome to the forum Smile

I was wondering about the walks too - is that all "enforced" walking on lead, or is some of it off lead where he can just sniff, mooch around, take things at his own pace?

I (roughly) follow the five minute rule with Minnie-Moo in terms of lead walking. I know it seems like very little exercise when they are so young, but you can do short sessions of training to help tire their brains out.

I also found taking her out for socialisation and meeting lots of new people seemed to tire her out. I carried her around before her second jab and then also carried her part-way when she'd done enough walking for the day. The bonus of having a dainty lab Smile

I've not had a collie from a pup, only a fairly laid back rescue, but lab pups certainly seem to vary rather, from reading this forum.

Thank you for all the replies, I thought I may well have been exercising him too much. The two 20 minute walks a day have been enforced lead walks, and he bumbles about the garden as well. Pictures to follow as I have just discovered I have a card reader error with the digi camera!

Hi there and welcome to LF Smile.

I am about to be Mummy to my little boy Fletch. We collect him on Thursday!!!! I sort of can't wait. A massive part of me is really looking forward to him coming. BUT also my youngest child has taken 4 years to sleep through the night and that has driven me nuts!! So I hope Fletch will settle for the night fast in his crate.

He may not be with me yet but all the stuff he needs is already littering the house!!!!

Nimrod sounds like a cutie, can't wait to see photos.

Putting photos on this site isn't my best fortee but here goes
