Even though i'm in the business of insurance etc etc, this pet insurance lark baffles me. We got Lucy insured with PetPlan when she was 8 weeks old, i think it might be their 'value' plan, but I could be wrong, but costs us £13 a month.

Lucy had X-rays a few months ago, and diagnosed with HD. We haven't claimed yet (just haven't got round to it) but it was just over £400 to have the X-rays, which is hardly 'petty cash', but am worried that if she has future problems because of her HD, i'm not sure they will pay out. Is that how this 'per condition' thing works? I.e. if they pay out £400 because of the x-rays, if she needed a hip replacement or something (god forbid) down the road, is it likely they wont pay out again?

I'm probably gonna ring them, but thought i'd ask fellow folk on here... Shocked (sorry to hjack the thread)

Jemima, you'd need to check out the policy as Petplan offer different ones.

One of mine is on the budget plan I think, which covers up to £4k a year in vet bills I believe - and therefore if she had xrays costing £400 for example, I would still have £3600 for vet bills for the rest of the year, which would then renew to the £4k again for the following insurance year, but check out your policy and see what it says as this is just an example.

Sorry to hear Lucy has HD.

Thanks Angela, think i'll check this out this afternoon. I'm more worried about this 'per condition' i.e. they'll only pay out once (however much) for each condition, therefore if they pay out for £400 (due to her being diagnosed with HD) even if it is just £400, they wont EVER pay out again in the future for the same problem. Actually, now you mention it, i think she's on the Budget plan too.

Angela, also posted a question to you on the 'What made you smile today' thread....

And yes, thank you for your kind words about Lucy's HD - unfortunately, we did all our research and asked all the right questions and even saw all the certificates on hip scores, eye tests etc. and all were ok. Vet thinks that it was caused by some form of 'trauma' rather than being 'genetic'....typical...just goes to show, with all this talk of pedigree breeding and health testing, sometimes you can still be unlucky Sad

sorry about the hips - it does happen that even though the sire & dam have good scores, the pups can have higher ones... and different dogs in the same litter can have very different hip scores too

i am a great fan of pet insurance --- watch out though for policies with big excesses with older dogs ??
