I want a rescue dog, we have a 7 month old boy and feel he would benefit from a pal. I approached LR South East who were very helpful, did a home check, we passed with flying colours, but so far, nothing has happened. I was quite definate about the type of dog we wanted, approx 2 years old, a boy, black, and one that was reasonably calm and unlikely to chase my sheep, chickens, ducks etc. At the moment there does not seems to be any likely candidates available in my area that fits the bill but it is frustrating as I keep seeing all these smashing dogs desperately needing homes on LF and my heart goes out to them. I will just have to be patient but hope one arrives before the bad weather comes as getting it settled and sorted is so much easier in the summertime. Fingers crossed. Sue.
I was going to say I know where there is a gorgeous boy looking for a home .......... then I read on and saw you wanted black, 2 years and calm-ish The boy I know about is yellow, 8 months, a bit excitable ....... but adorable and doing wonders in his foster home.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll find the right dog soon. After all, there are SO many coming into rescues at the moment.
I think it is brilliant that you are considering a rescue dog. We have two here.
Because you want a 'calm' lab, a young one and one that is good with livestock, it may take you a little while to find your friend but I am certain it will happen. Hopefully not too long away now. All that said, it will be worth the wait, so please don't give in
Sometimes when you have a narower criteria it can take longer to find the right dog.
What about a Lab x or a Lab of a differnt sex of colour if the temperament is right?

What about a younger lab (boy or girl) that you can train and bomb-proof yourself around your sheep and chickens? Maybe those are the sticking points??
Would a younger dog not be a little more trainable to that sort of thing? I may be wrong.
Hello Crowlady A older dog can adapt too. My two are rescues and were working on an estate until going into rescue and had never been house dogs. They learnt about house training, vacuum cleaner, radio and no counter surfing with the minimum of fuss; although age six and almost seven, they have plenty of energy, healthy respect for sheep and horses.
I do keep mine on a lead when going through areas with sheep although they do ignore them. It could well be worth considering a retired gun dog as they're more likely to be aware of what is expected in a rural environment.

Well thanks for all those kind words and encouragement, yes I'm sure the right dog will come along soon and I am just being impatient. I am happy to have an older dog but worry that my lad would be a bit overpowering for a real oldie, he is an action man type and may be a bit overwhelming for a senior citizen to cope with!! I do realise that the criterior is a bit difficult to fill but all my chickens and ducks are so chilled out with the dogs it would be a shame to spoil life for them with one who instantly launches into chase mode-they simply do not expect it and we have never allowed that situation to arise. Same with the sheep, they are all old ladies now and could not cope with being chased about. So I shall just have to wait, an ex gundog would be a good idea but I have no idea how to locate one-any ideas anyone? Thanks again.
