The thing about dried food is that it is dry!! Once eaten it is going to absorb moisture in the stomach and if there is not enough moisture in there then it can cause problems. Those around when dried food was first introduced will probably remember all the problems of the time! This is the reason why I always add water. At least I'm ensuring that there is something in the stomach for it to soak up.
If your puppy is drinking plenty then it does not matter but puppies being puppies, sometimes have other things on their minds at meal times! That's my theory anyway
I've wondered how long i should be adding the water to Alfie's food for. I always add boiling water and let it cool down before giving it to him, is this best or would it be ok to add cold water

I do this with Dan's food as well - he's on Oscars. He's a year now and I just always have. I do give him raw bones to chew as well to keep his teeth in good order. Someone also told me that adding water to dried food slowed the eating down a bit - don't know whether that's true or not.

To boil or not to boil, that is the question?
Whether tis nobler in the mind to ott it up
or to pour it on cold?
With due deference to the scribblings of the noble Bard!
Some people do one, others the other. I know Amy's breeder always boils the water and soaks the food. I poured boiling water on to help it soak, but only for the first couple of weeks. Bu 10 weeks old I figure the puppy can manage it crunchy so at that stage I stop boiling the water and just pour it on cold immediately before feeding. I like feeding it crunchy for the scouring action it gives to keep the teeth clean.
I fed Ruby this evening with food soaked with water (cold not 'ott' ) it does slow the eating down Took 10 seconds for her to polish her meal off as opposed to 5
