Hi all

first off, I apologise if this has a section that i have missed.

We have been using chudley's dog food (dry) since we got her, as this is what the breeder used, but I've seen since that It's not meant to be that good a dog food.

But you read so much, that I'm no longer sure if we should continue
with it, or move her onto something else..

please can anyone who has used, or still uses chudley's ;et me know what you think, Or if you simply know more than I, it would be very helpfull

many thanks

Stuart

when i got my first lab i continued to use what he was eating from the breeder thinking that they know best but i learnt they probably know as much as we know. my sister had a german shephard with a dodgie tum and also skin problems so she reserched a unknown dog food which turned out to be the only dog food that we both use and that dog food was burns complete. mind you as a change we also now use james wellbeloved as wellas natures diet, fish and cottage cheese. I have also researched the contents and Ithink that dog foods that contain cheap fillers such as wheat and sugar beet check the web site WHATS IN DOG FOOD and you are in for a shock. bakers is one of the worst dog food as it has created loads of ear, skin and stomach problems . burns and james wellbeloved is not cheap but they come in 3 sizes of bags and you dont use as much as the others, PLUS THERE IS A REDUCTION IN POOS which is great give them a try. my dog dylans coat is fantastic a hope that this advice is ok.

There are as many opinions on dog foods as there are members on this forum!

There isn't just one that suits every dog or owner for that matter. If you have a search around the forum you will see advise on all kinds of feeding.

I personally have used James Wellbeloved and Autarky one gave my dog dry skin the other the runs. Both of these are excellent foods and at opposite ends of the price range!

I'm currently feeding my older dog Burns Active and the puppy is on Skinners Field and trial puppy. Again both are excellent foods. I will likely be moving the older dog onto Skinners adult by the time the puppy comes to be ready to move.

What I would personally say is.... avoid large brand name foods like Bakers. They are a bit like feeding your dogs smarties - what is with all those colours?!?!?! My dog is hyper enough without adding to the issue! I would also say that price isn't necessarily and indicator of quality.

Weigh up what you need from your dogs food - is he a puppy, is he very active/works, does he have allergies, dry skin, sloppy poop etc. Do you have a particular ethic that you won't feed Duck say... or don't like Nestle for example. What is your comfertable budget and can you get a ready supply of the food when you have made your choice.

Good luck and if you have any questions about one food type over another, don't be afraid to ask... we have a wealth of experience on this forum to share! Smile

Our lab is 6 months old. The breeder used to feed him Chudleys and we continued with it as long as supplies lasted. Now, we are unable to source it locally, and so have moved to Wagg Complete. I've noticed recently that his bowel movements have become rather erratic, as has the colour and consistency of poo. A google search for information seems to point out that the Wagg might be the cause. Is this true and what would you advise?

Hi

Our lab is 18 weeks and was also fed on Chudleys dry puppy.

She has since swapped onto royal canin and is doing well with that, it's not cheap tho!

Some food companies will send you samples and info sheets if you contact them, arden grange were very helpful and i think their food is good.

Chudleys is one of the cheaper foods but i am sure many dogs will thrive on it. Our pup's poos are firmer and less frequent since changing tho.

Today the little minx has turned her nose up at her food, they are fussy little devils!

Hi,

To give you a perspective on a 'cheaper' food. We fed Lucy on Skinners Field and Trial Puppy food until she was 9 months old as we were reccommended it for her coat. She is now on Skinners Ruff and Ready. Her coat is beautiful and we have no bowel issues. We only tried this initially because somebody told me it would be more appealling because she was a bit of a grazer when it came to her food (looks like a cross between dry dog food and rabbit museli).

We also buy it from vetuk online at £17 for 15kg bag, so pretty cheap to be honest. They also have a good range of working dog food and 'pet' dog food at a range of prices.

I hope you manage to make sense of all the wonderful advice you will get - i'm afraid every dog is different, as will be the advice you receive Very Happy

Lorna,

Ooooh interesting - how much do you pay for it??

Do you 'work' your dogs? I don't work Lucy and she is already a pretty ummmm....active dog. I will check out the ingredients and see what the difference is. Sounds like it would be worth giving her a trial on it.

Thanks
Michaela

No I don't work mine but the museli mix and the Muesli Mix and Ruff & Ready have the same proteint content, lots and lots and lots of people who feed their dogs Field & Trial don't work their dogs Wink although saying that on looking at the prices there is not mutch difference, probably just the VAT
