Just remembered one more thing...

There are a few companies out there that will not cover certain types of conditions/illnesses regardless of the dogs medical history. So it is well worth asking what conditions are NOT included in the policy...as they will not offer this information up front.

Just something to bear in mind!

i've just moved my 9yo dog from m & s to axa (no pre-existing conditions) as axa have a 70 excess only rather than 70 plus 20%...

my younger dog (who has intermittent skin problems) is still with M & S....

if your dog has no pre-existing conditions it's easy to change companies if you're not happy with the cover/premium of your existing company

It is a minefield and I think we've all at some point asked the very same questions that you've asked.

After alot of umm'ing and ahh'ing we decided to go with the Halifax. This policy is a life time one as explained here...
http://www.halifax.co.uk/insurance/doginsurance.asp

I also liked the fact that if your dog has to have a special diet this policy will pay the difference it will cost you compared to the normal food you buy.
Ours is £22 a month which we found to be quite reasonable. Petplan was over £40 per month for us which many on here favour. I just couldn't see any benefit with this over the Halifax policy.

Good luck Very Happy

p.s. Argos isn't very good as it is so much per condition. This isn't renewed each year so you may end up running out of your allowance.

Edited to add...
Some companies don't pay the vet direct so you have to watch out for this aswell. Halifax does by the way Wink And no....I don't work for them Wink

You have to be very careful when choosing pet insurance,I have spent the last month getting qoutes for max my 4 month old lab. The wording and terminology they use is very confusing.

Proper 'cover for life' policies are often worded as '£xx, per year' and NOT '£xx, per condition'.

Companies that I know that do offer genuine 'cover for life' are Axa, Halifax, Hsbc, Petplan, Petguard.

Personally petguard is coming out cheapet for me at just under £17 per month, or Axa £19 per month.

Companies that do not offer this level, include argos and More than.

There is a good comparison site

http://www.defaqto.com/consumer/insurance/pet1.aspx

They are an independant website that enables you to compare different insurers policy against each other.
Just go to 'compare dog' on the left hand side of the page.

Have been doing my homework, and used the compaison charts. The Argos and Tesco didn't really offer lifetime cover, they had the 12 month rule. I did an online search with HSBC and Halifax and both their quotes were around the £19 mark, I cannot get online for More Than.

Today I did a quote wth Axa direct (Halifax are underwritten by Axa) and that quote was £16 and then I did a quote with Petguard £14 (I left out the option of overseas) .

Somewhere when I did the quote with Axa I am sure it said they had been underwritten by a company called JTL or JML, (though of course I can't find it now lol) and Pet Guard are underwritten by the same company so it possibly seems that this company are underwriting all the big ones and they of course are adding their little whack on, not a lot £5 between the highest and lowest but if you ever had to have treatment, they are obviously going to renew on renewal at a higher rate lol and that £5 now will treble or whatever, although JTL or JML whatever they were called said they do not punish you at renewal if you've had to have treatment.

I like the policy it is £X amount per year (no 12 month) you can choose the policy you like, as I did, did not choose the overseas policy as won't take Chester overseas, also they have the full complimentary treatments, and the others emergency boarding etc.

So now do I go with Petguard or with Axa. Have just emailed Natalie (Littlelab) as she said on a post Axa are a nightmare....and need to know why.

Ooo I don't envy you.....there are so many companies and so many different policies Shocked

We chose Petplan for Bailey, the unlimited amount one, and covers her for life with an illness.....think we pay about £26 a month

I've never had to use it so cant comment how good they are in that respect but my vet was one who recommended them to me (although they were meant to say M&S Laughing ).....she had her labs insured with petplan

I know, don't you just hate having to look for insurance plans. You look at so many it makes you feel fuzzy after.

Putting this thread on has really helped as I was unsure about choosing between condition or pot, and then again pot has different meanings.

Like you the obvious to me was Pet plan, as that is the cover I wanted and some like Tesco don't have that, also really quite concerned that some companies hike on the excess plus XXX% when they reach a certain age. Someone on this thread said Halifax don't do that and Halifax is Axa but Petguard offer exactly the same plan but I saved £2 by not adding overseas cover, which I am sure will help with renewal costs. Am going to ring Petguard tomorrow to clarify some questions but looks like that will be the one I will go with at the cost of just over £14.
