Well,
It was only yesterday when I was saying how Sam, my mums 19 (nearly 20) year old Jack Russell cross Yorkshire terrier would out live me. However this was not to be the case.
Sadly he had been in declining health over the past few years. Slowly loosing his sight until he was completely blind, 6 months ago. Going deaf, completely in his left ear and almost completely in his right. He had a stroke a few months ago that left him giddy all the time and shaking constantly. He went to the vets yesterday for his steroid booster and the vet decided that poor sam had been through enough and asked my mum if she wanted him pts.
In absolute bits, she agreed, and now poor sam is away to the bridge to join Beanie and Trixie and some of his own pups he has outlived, as well as all of the others there waiting for him.
I can remember with a teary smile the day that Sam turned up, I was only 5 years old and remember it to be one of the best days of my life. 2 weeks later we got Trixie, a nice little Yorkshire terrier who was to become a mother to Sams pups, and a loving companion to Sam, until she passed away aged 11. He pined for her until his last day. Now he can rejoin her and be happy and pain free.
He is terribly missed by all of us. Most of all my mum. Who has seen all of her children grow up and leave home but always had Sam to keep her company. This morning when she would have usually got up to check him and give him his morning toffee popcorn, he will have been gone and a huge gap missing in her life.
She has asked the vet to keep Sam until tomorrow so that I have time to make Sam a little coffin and grave, we are going to have a little celebration of sams life on Saturday, and I imagine all of us will be in floods of tears as we say a final goodbye to our much loved family pet.
Awwww I remember your post about Sammy too, so sorry to hear he`s gone, will be very hard for your mum after having him all that time, a celebration of his life sounds a wonderful idea.
Thinking of you all.
Run Free at the Bridge Sammy with Trixie and all your "kids"
I have been trying to find a nice head stone (help on where to find a good one welcome) to give my mum as a present (if you can call it that)
when I came across this.
