Lillies snapped her dew claw out on our walk this morning... its split on the leg side diagnally across and has exposed all the quick inside, its sort of hanging off.... any ideas whats best to do? leave it? cut it off? strap it up?

usually she breaks them off completely and i just bath it put a spot of iodine on it and leave it... looks sore though

Izzy did a similar thing not so long ago and had to have an operation.
Maybe take her to the vets to get checked if you are worried at all.
Hope she is ok. Hugs

Basil exposed the length of his quik too a while back, on a regular claw though. Luckily it healed without infection and the rest of the claw grew back.

it looks like its just split the nail... has exposed the quick but its hangin on at a right angle with a substantial amount of outer nail still attached... im not sure whether to cut it off or leave it, just worried she'll keep catching it. i wouldnt be bothered if it had all come off Confused

I cut the outer claw section off (that doesn't hurt to cut afterall) and left the exposed quik all in tact but visible.

It's vulnerable for a while, so the risk is they'll catch the quik on something and then it will really hurt, but the outer claw grw back pretty quick for Basil. He had about 1cm long of the white tube like quik exposed.

I'd pop to the vet - to ask how to ward off infection without causing too much discomfort.
A Chessie I know did this recently - it was bandaged and cleaned but still got infected - so operation required and result got infected again hence another operation! After being out of action for a month or two all is back to normal.

Hope it grows back soon without problem!
