Has anyone used Petplan or PDSA? Just wondered what they are like? I was keen on Marks and Spencer but not sure now as heard mixed reviews. Thanks in advance.

I'm with Petplan. Cost a bit more, but illnesses are covered for life. Have had to claim for Bess's ED operation, and they pay without quibble very quickly. They cover her drugs, and her therapy sessions if needed. I think they're worth the extra pennies!

When you make a claim, does the cost go up the following year drastically? I know any insurance probably does that but just wondered if it goes up drastically?

I would choose Petplan over others but it is the most expensive. I have one policy with M&S but I'm not sure I'd choose them again - although I haven't claimed with them and have no personal reason to complain.

AXA, which used to underwrite M&S, now offers its own pet insurance direct and I gather the policy is similar and well priced, but I have no experience of this company.

No idea what the PDSA offers, sorry. I would always go for a policy which covers for life, usually with £x thousand per year for vet bills, rather than a set amount per condition.

Not been with them a year yet, so will have to let you know if the premium goes up! Bearing in mind I have claimed over £3000 so far for Bess I would think it will change! - but as I say, it's worth it.

Hi Sarah

As Angela said definitely get a policy which covers the pet for life - as in £x per year rather than per condition - because once the cover has been used that is it - be warned that companies try to hide the actual extent of the cover, I asked what I thought were the right questions and believed that what I was about to buy was lifetime cover but someone me right on that one and when I went back and asked a few more questions the sad truth was confirmed so i went somewhere else...

With life time cover you get an annual allowance so at the start of each policy year you get your allowance for that year ie £3000 for 2008, £3000 for 2009 etc etc as long as the policy remains in force. I have sucha policy and it has meant that Neo has been covered for his entire 5 years as we have claimed each year....

i just got a quote from the PDSA and they are charging £17 per month and cover up to £5000 per year, where as pet plan are £33ish per month and have unlimited cover. Ruby is nearly 7 months, is it worth going with the PDSA as she is young and may not need a high cover or would you just go for pet plan? Really dont know.

Hi Sarah,

We're getting our pup in a couple of weeks and we're going with Petplan. It's peace of mind really. HD and ED could potentially both start showing when a pup is less than a year old and could cost a lot of money so with an unlimited lifetime cover policy any vets fees relating to the hip or elbow would be covered forever.

HTH,

i was with petplan for years -- but they hiked up the insurance cover when a dog of mine reached 10 and the excess was huge......

have been with M & S for years ---- they were brilliant when underwritten with Axa - but again with another dog the excess and premium for a dog that has reached 9 is too high........

so that dog i've moved to Axa - only a £50 excess

if you have a healthy dog, it's easy to shop around and change companies - but there is no cover for the first 14 days usually .....
