I never had any issues with Coal when he was on burns and the only reason i changed him was cost.
I have to say there is nothing 'magical' in burns. its ingredients do not differ greatly from other similar foods such as JWB. Maybe the people on the end of the phone aren't very helpful but i ignored their feeding guidelines and feed his on an amount guided by eye... if he was too heavy or looked pinched, i'd down or up the amount i was feeding til we reached a good balance.
Each dog is different and there are bound to be good and bad stories for each brand. If the dog isn't doing well, and suffering, then change the brand.
But i think people in those links posted above, should really have done something sooner for their dogs. you know your dog, not the person on the end of the phone.
coal is now on skinners and doing really well on it, like he was on burns.
sorry if that was a mini rant but it sometimes seems as tho people are expecting burns to be some magical food and its not. compare the ingredients with simialr foods and you'll see they are pretty much the same

I don't think I expect anything more of Burns than I do of any other good quality dog food really, and as it no longer agrees with him I will definitely be changing it.
I think what is bothering me is that they publicise the fact that it has been created by a vet, but they can only give one standard answer to any problems faced by customers!
Other than now I've had no problems at all with Burns and I certainly believe that no food suits every dog.

I can only comment on what i have experience with with my dog,,,
Beta purina,,,,,He went off it and had bad belly
changed to JWB
first few weeks ok,, but after a while went off that as well and Belly was worse than ever,,, actually cried when he had no choice but to poop in the house one night, he was devestated.
changed to skinners,,, he loves it, its cheaper, the service from then is really really good,,, far better than most companies these days.
So no matter what quality each food is,, i think dogs will vary from one to the other..
I liked chicken soup when i was a kid,,,cant stand it now
and i hated carrots, but quite like them now.
so the same applies to humans as it does any food,, if quality starts lacking or you go off it,,, move on to something new.
I should think burns must have a rediculous ammount of people who feed their food, and maybe they are correct in saying that most of the problems are resolved by feeding slightly less,, but thats something we'll never know, so i say dont let them wind ya up and move ya custom onto someone who provides a bit better service if that is important to you.

Sam I think the only comment I would make to what you ahve said is that Burns market the food as being magical - look at their newsletter andf the claims made - in fact on one notable occasion suggesting that feeding Burns was a cure for epileptic fits.....
So many letters my dog had..... I fed Burns and he is now cured.... epilepsy digestive issues arthritis....
So if there are unrealistic expectations well burns foster them - and most people stick with the same food when there are difficulties because the received wisdom is that if you change you encourage a fussy dog....
So I don;t think the criticism of the reviewers is entirely justified - just my opinion though.
What foods are you trying Nic??
