Ok - so I don't know if I have put this into the right section - please advise mods if you need to move!!
I have been spending a couple of hours trying to devise enough names to submit to the Kennel club in application for our affix. God, it's hard - does anyone have any tips? I'm trying for a shorter one really as a longer affix can restrict the actual dog name but would also like to know something about the kennel club form:- They ask for a Primary name - is this your preferred 1st choice and then there is space for another 5
names!!!!! God - I'll be doing them till next year at this rate!!!
Can peeps on here who have experience of this tell me whether on the whole your 1st choice is granted or generally not???!!!
If any of my others are granted I probably won't like them!!!

Mine wasn't Jackie - I got my 3rd choice (Wickwhistle) which was a reversal of my 1st choice (Whistlewick). It took me ages to get used to it but now over a year later, I really quite like it
From what I have observed, if you choose something that's quite obscure - like not really words - then it is more likely to be granted as a first choice. Like Eikcaj...nobody will have that one!!!
Forgot to say, I was told to really think about things that mean something to you and jiggle the letters - my last choice was something that didn't really mean anything to me other than I liked the meaning of the word, but had special meaning to the person who suggested it. Not sure I would have been happy with it if it had've been granted but I thought hey 6 options gotta use em all!!!

I REALLY wanted my first choice but instead got my second .
It might be worth googling your choices to see if it throws up any potential clashes. Good luck!
Lucy, I really like Wickwhistle - it's a really good strong word, easy to say and easy to remember!

We wanted Tarhin as our kennel name, and ended up with Tarimoor - its made up from the letters from Tau, Rhuna (our last rescue girl) and Indie, and moor because we live close to Hob Moor in York, but this was about the fourth choice.

Jackie it can save a lot of time if when you have your first choice you ring the kc and ask whether anyone actually has it. I did that and managed to get my first choice Otherwise you may end up with one you didn't really want. I think it was Sue who suggested doing that and the KC are happy to assist. You still have to go in the paper thingy where peeps have a month to object to your prefix.

I was on about my 19th choice before I got mine I did have one granted, but a well known show kennel from the same group objected appraently, so they took it away again and i was back to square one.
Mine is my name and my daughter's name jumbled up

I did that and I was told that they could confirm there was no such existing affix but they could not confirm that it would be approved, and it wasn't

Well I have just rang them with mine and it is an affix - well virtually, has an 'n' on the end so very unlikely it would be granted - they did say I could add another word to make it different, but even so
Back to square one!!!

You are right Nicky, they cannot confirm it however they can save you an awful lot of form filling, anticipation and disappointment.
It was funny you mentioned the cat prefix. When I showed and bred cats I submitted so many names that were disallowed that I looked through a Crufts schedule, saw a name, submitted it and it was granted. Cat ones are for life so if the kennel ever decide to breed cats I have the prefix

Am I right in assuming that they only take into consideration the Kennel Club names in this country ?
