has he caught it at all - any evidence of a nick or scratch - is his eye red?

To be honest as it is the eye, I wouldn't take any chances and check with the vet

Could be but I'd have thought it would be both eyes, when Oscar had an allergic reaction a few weeks ago both his ears swelled up really thick. If he doesn't seem overly concerned I'd do as Mary suggested and call the vet in the morning

Do you mean the eye it's self or the flesh around the eye? I suspect you mean the flesh. As I've no doubt you know, the eye is a bag of fluid which is constantly leaking out via the drain and is constantly being replaced. It the eye it's self is swelling then it means the drain is blocked. This is Glaucoma. The condition is very painful and leads to total blindness!!

To everyone. If your dog's eye starts to swell then get to the vet straight away! Do not stop for anything. Minutes can make the difference between saving the eye and loosing the eye!

Glaucoma is thank goodness not a condition which normally affects Labradors but as with everything, there are exceptions to every rule. A Flatcoat belonging to a friend of mine, a breed which does have a Glaucoma problems, has had to have both eyes removed!

I'm not trying to worry people but it is that serious!

Regards, John

Hi John

Thanks for that - will definatley put that on my list to look out for. Gill said that Muffin wasn't concerned - so I'd also imagine it was the skin around the eye, if it was the eye and was painful Muffin would be quite distressed - wouldn't he? Embarassed
