Last night my beloved black lab Sparky crossed over. He was 12 years old and the light of my life. He became a part of my family when I was 7, and was the absolute best dog anyone could ask for. His health declined over the last year, but inside he was still the same Sparky we loved.
I am away at college now and I hate that I missed out on so much of his last months. I left home two nights ago never imagining that it would be the last time I would get to see him. He had a stroke that night, and yesterday was just a battle for him. He couldn't walk, eat, drink, or even hold his head up. My mom and I had to make the toughest decision of our lives, but he was so tired...you could see it in his eyes.
My mom held him and sang and talked to him the entire day yesterday, up until it was time...and then some. He got to go to sleep at home in his bed surrounded by the ones who love him...but I couldn't be there, I am too far away. I will always regret that.
He will always be a part of me and my life.
