Thanks for bumping this back up Becs. Really interesting read.
It's funny, I was just reading Tarimoor's (Joanne's) thread on how far you'd be prepared to go. I started typing out a reply and then deleted.... because I only meant to duck in to LF for 5 mins, and it's been an hour already
However, the gist of what I was going to say fits in with this post. It's only really now that I feel I know my dog and me when it comes to training. It's only recently that I've developed greater insight into my faults and been getting better at reading my dog. And it's only recently that I've developed more confidence to politely agree to disagree on certain things, such as lifting dog by scruff and dragging back.... I'm now absolutely confident in saying to any trainer that I'd rather just stick her lead back on and heel her in a 'no nonsense' way back to the spot.
I think I'd like to find a permanent trainer to see regularly who'd get to know me and my dog(s) inside out. In the meantime though, I do really enjoy and value hearing different opinions/advice/hints/tips from lots of different sources. I think the key for me is two-fold: a) in not letting all the differing opinions confuse me and b) if I am trying things out, to try it out for long enough so as to be consistent. Hold training is a case in point. I found one method really wasn't working but gave it a good go first, before I went back and said I'm stuck. Then I got something different to try, and that worked wonders. Now I can go back a little bit to the first method and running the two together is working a treat
