The overall thing is Monya, are you tribe happy and healthy on the diet they are having now?, if they are and there`s no probvlems then I`d stick with it, you can always look at supplements if they show signs of problems as they age
yes they are all very healthy my vet dosent agree with the raw but agrees they are doing well on it
diva isnt on raw yet but i am going to change her over n am glad the pink noses were mentioned as hers is going pink maybe thats something i would try with her tho it dosent really bother me
it is confusing with some books/sites saying do n others saying dont same with the veges thanks all
Try to think of their diet in terms of a dog having to hunt for it's own food. It would chase down a small animal or bird and eat it all. That "meal" would consist of the fur/feathers which would be waste products and any eaten would "pass through" (trying to be polite here) there would be a significant amount of bone, some meat (flesh), offal, (we all know what that is) and the contents of the prey animals stomach. This would usually be partially digested vegetable matter.
In feeding a raw diet you are trying to replicate this "prey animal meal" so the quantities of each part need to be simelar, ie, bone, meat, offal, veggies. Hunters will aslo eat a small amout of fruit, eggs and other easily available free food, but believe me they don't wash thier little paws, put on an apron, built a fire and cook it first, they wolf it down whole, neither do they harvest cereals or search out vegetables in season. If they wouldn't eat it in the wild they don't need it.
Obviously in an animal with recognised medical needs or an older pet some conditions can be eased with suppliments and the like, but the harsh realisty is that these animals wouldn't survive if they were fending for themselves and nature would take it's course. Obviously none of us would let our pet suffer and a condition which can be helped should be helped, but generally speaking a fit and well dog shouldn't need suppliments and if there is a problem it needs accurate diagnosis and suppliments specific to the pets needs.
I used to add quite a few supplements when we started BARF feeding, but its dwindled now to a very occasional cod liver oil or garlic capsule. They get everything they need in the food they are fed in its raw state, and I invested in a book that tells you which foods contain which vitamins and minerals, so we add those to their food rather than supplements.
The only time I'll change this is when we plan a litter, then I'd be persuaded to add in extras (and leave out bits they don't need) to try to ensure a safe whelping for the girls and any pups. And, I may be persuaded as they get older to add in the odd extra to help out any ailments they develop (fingers crossed I won't need to).
