Hi All,

Donny needs to lose a few kilos as he's creeping over the 40kg mark. He is 3, neutered, active but is a stocky lad. He is with me all day and gets two good walks (45 mins and 1 hour in length) through the week and two much longer walks at the weekend. We do sniffing around, running, retrieving and swimming during our daily walks.

I think it is the food rather than lack of exercise. Although I am happy to up that and do three walks a day, I would like to use a diet food that will help him shift the kilos easily too. I would like one that is a 'good' dog food (no nasty/crap ingredients), will fill him up without him feeling excessively hungry and tastes good! Not too much to ask!!

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks for your help.

Meant to ask, what do you think of Hill's RD?

Ours are fed raw so the portions are quite small anyway, but if I need any of them to lose a couple of kgs I just reduce the amounts, and make sure any treats aren't extra to their daily allowance, but part of it. So use kong toys as I can make low fat fillings.

I wouldn't bother with changing foods, especially to special Diet types. Just feed a 1/3 less and if he seems hungry put some cooked veg in to bulk up his dinners. Wink

What do you feed him at the moment? Could you just try reducing the quantity of that and then maybe "bulk" his food out with some veg?

I feed mine Naturediet and think it's a great pet food. I haven't had cause to use it but they do a Lite version. I think if any of mine did need to lose weight I would try reducing the amount of their usual food first though.

Edit - sorry was typing at the same time as Jules Laughing

There are a few of the quality foods which do 'light' varieties.
You could use any. perhaps replace part of the food with vegetables- and use veggies instead of treats. (hope I'm not teaching you suck eggs). While he is used to a good amount of exercise- only more will be needed if you keep to the asame amount of food I would have thought. Like humans you actually have to eat to lose weight Rolling Eyes Just the right sort of food.
Again not meaning to be silly- have you spoken to your vet- or is this request the result of your vet speaking to you? (my vet is very 'fattist')
Having been a bit paranoid with my dogs weights from the beginning - have not had to resort to dieting...I am hoping someone else has the secret and is willing to share....(pity I wasnt so paranoid about myself Embarassed Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad Embarassed )

I've used Hills RD for Emily when, despite the exercise etc, her weight started creeping up. It worked very well. Of course, the main problem with Labradors is that diet or no diet they are ALWAYS hungry Smile

Chopped apple and carrot Smile
Doggy diet food are a major rip off ,just feed less of his normal food ,if its a dry food soak it loads so it fluffs out and he thinks he is getting more Wink

I make a chicken broth, just with carrot and a little bit of potato or turnip and just boil it up. Bung up the end of the kong toy by bashing a bit of root veg in there, then fill with the lovely chicken broth, prop upright in the freezer and leave until set Very Happy Avoid too many root veggies though so no mashed potato kongs (our girls love those with cheese in) just a few chunks of root veg but if you bulk out with cooked veg try and use mostly greens (no onions as they're not good for dogs).
