My mum bought me a lovely sewing machine for Christmas (2 years ago) and it is still in its box so I thought it was about time I used it!
Now, I would like to have a go at making some dog beds - nothing fancy to start with, just rectangular cushions. Does anyone else do this and if so, any tips?
I would do if my sewing machine hadn't curled up and died.
I would be thinking along the lines of convenience. So make the cover removal and washable (fleece would be good).....and for the filling I would probably use a folded single quilt (one that also fits in the washing machine ). Also I would probably not use zip fasteners, as mine tend to chew the ends of these ...but would go for velcro or even just fabric ties.
I would and could but dont have the patience good luck
I would stitch a permanaent water proof fabric ( incontinence bed shets ?) around the quilt as a permanent cover ,doesnt have to look pretty ,wont be seen .The quilt will last longer and not get smelly and be wipable .Then have a removable washable soft cover

If you dont fancy messing with fasteners on the outer cover ,make the back side in 2 pieces ,each 2 thirds of the ength and seem the edhges and stitch them in an overlap .a bit ike making easy cushion covers
oops sorry ,I quoted instead of editing!
I have made dog beds for my 2... usually with duvets as the middle and then i make a cover thats removable, usually fasten it with velcro but i like Skatty's idea of using incontenence bed sheets
I've bought my 2 a waterproof bed and its sooo much easier so i'd be tempted to try the waterproof cover idea
Good luck and happy sewing Don't forget to take piccys of your finished product for us to see!!!
I've used the same method - cheap duvet and whatever covering takes my fancy (and if it's an off-cut that's cheaper, all the better) Haven't found a successful way of fastening though, having tried both zips and velcro, maybe it's the nice crunchy feeling, but they leave the rest of it alone and go straight for the fastening

The inner bag is just plain white cotten made into large rectangle, filled up with beans to the level you want and then sew the opening shut.
The we got some hard wearing thick blue curtain material. made that into a rectangle and left an opening just big enough to get the inner bag in and out,
that is held shut with heavy duty popper type thingies every3 inches or so.
He hated it to start with,, but now if a little too keen on it sometimes lol.
If i did it again, i think i would use cushion type fibre filling rather than beans,, but considering it costs us in region of £15, you cant moan too much.
