Nope - it is never too late providing you have the original signed paperwork from the breeder. If you don't, there is a form you can obtain from the Kennel Club which the breeder must sign before you can do the transfer.
It is not mandatory - from a breeder perspective it can be a little surprising (and possibly annoying) - I've only had one litter, but you can imagine my shock the first time I logged into discover I now had 12 dogs in my ownership, when in fact there were only 2 pups (plus my own four) still with me
But as Nicola pointed out, we did all the paperwork together when I met her in Kent, and it took ME ages to send it on to the KC

Guilty as charged I'm afraid
Neo will be 5 in June and I have only just applied to transfer him from the breeders names into mine - I kind of intended to when he arrived, but with him being so ill I just never got round to it. So far as i was concerned he was all mine in reality and the KC papers did not alter that ..
It was just something that was not overly important to me, now with Bramble I am thinking about showing him and so the transfer has had to be applied for - hence why Neo's went off, but if it was not for that then actually I doubt that I would have bothered.
what is important is that he is loved and well cared for - and the bestest dog on the planet!!!!

Gosh, I'd never thought of it from a breeder's perspective before. My parents have had two labs and although both have been KC registered, they've not bothered to register them in their own name as they questioned the point when the girls weren't going to worked, shown, bred from or be anything other than adored family pets!

Nope - I am going to sulk everytime you speak to me now - ROFLMAO
I am the worlds WORST when it comes to paperwork - if it can be done on line, brilliant - if it can't - heaven help me - and ashamed to say I would be falling into that category of breeders I know Diana loves so much (NOT)

We were dealing with a dog a while ago who had been passed on twice before being put into rescue. His original owners had not had him registered to them, and the 'owners' putting him in rescue didn't know who they (original owners) were.
On contacting the breeder, he had to admit that because there were still 3 not registered to their new owners and no one knew the original purchaser's name, he didn't know which dog we had
Seems sad somehow.

Yes that is sad. I have to say I keep a card system that records the KC name and pet name of each dog together with the details of the new owners. So should a pup of mine ever end up anywhere it shouldn't I would know exactly who originally purchased it from me.
