Hi,
My 11 month year old lab, Mati, has not been castrated yet. To date all advice has been to wait and see. He has been attacked once and other dogs seem to be growling at him more in the last month and he is growling back now. He was attacked by a dog in France last month too.
My feeling is that other dogs are trying to assert themslves over him as he comes into manhood.
We have been told that if we get him 'done' he should be less of a threat to other dogs and possibly be a little more obedient.
Does anyone have any views based on their experiences??
Thanks

Ian

Actually, some nurtured/castrated dogs seem to attract attention purely because they are castrated! it seems as if other dogs can't really 'place' them like they don't really smell like a non-castrated dog and they don't smell like a bitch either. I've certainly noticed that my dogs are always showing more interest in castrated dogs than entire ones....

I'm not entire sure why you are thinking about getting him castrated? it's just that if it's for a behavioral issue then unless it's sexual aggressive behavior then it's not likely to solve the problem. There are several pro's and con's for having your dog castrated health wise but most of the behavioral issues are something that you need to try and train your way out of.

I've got a couple of young dogs here and when they started to reach puberty, the older dogs started to keep a close eye on them like they would start not to let them get away with things like nicking their food or play all the time - the older dog would let out a growl or a sharp bark and the young dog got the message. At no time would they be nasty to the young dogs and it's also worth noting that also the bitches would put their feet down...

Hi Natasha, resons for consideration brought on by the fact that he was attacked twice in the last 6 weeks and other dogs seem to be more wary (growling) than they used to be. So whether that is behavioural or hormone related is the question. I also want to avoid him 'roaming' and getting lost if possible.

If he is roaming after the scent of in-season bitches than castration is likely to help.

If he is just wandering off because he simply wants to test the boundaries and annoy you then it will be a training issue, as he will do that anyway.

Charlie at that age was still in his adolescent "kevin" stage, and was always trying his luck, even though he was castrated at 9 months of age following a brush with an in-season bitch. Twisted Evil

So you're trying to 'cure' other dog's problems by castrating your own dog, then? to me it seems that it's the other dogs that you've met and have had a go at your dog, are the ones with problems Rolling Eyes

You will always meet less responsible dog owners like the ones that think they will have a stroll around with their bitch on heat or the ones who will let their dogs bully other people's dogs Rolling Eyes the only way you can guard yourself against that would be not to take your dog anywhere with public access. I believe that if you have a read though some of the posts in the 'Brawling' forum, you will find several post on this very subject: members having their dogs bullied or attacked by other dogs when walking them.

Just out of interest, have you had the chance of taking him to some dog training classes? I know that it's not all people that have the chance to go to some but it's really good for the dog and will also boost his confidence a bit when he's around other dogs.

The training classes will also be helpful in terms of obedience and him not doing a runner. Of all the dogs that I've had none have ever roamed for bitches but there might have been the odd occasion where a dog might have legged it when its seen a pheasant Laughing

I have an uncastrated male who will mount castrated dogs but play with uncastrated dogs or bitches. It does seem to attract uncastrated males if dogs are castrated.
