Anybody had a letter today from a Dr Stephen Harris from the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, Notts Uni ?

We have been asked to get some cheek swaps off Dudley(3 1/2 yr old Lab with a score of 87 ) so they can be examined under a new Research Project in conjunction with the Kennel Club, to see if they can develop a test to use on new born puppies to see if they have a predisposition for developing HD !

This will allow for the owner to introduce diet and excercise regimes to reduce the effects that HD gives during the dogs development years

I feel quite honoured that Duds is being used for this (amongst many others I assume ) and hope that they are successful as it will be such a breakthrough for this horrible condition

Penny - Black Lab - 3 years old in May

Had OCD in right knee
and HD in both hips

All conditions diagnosed at six months old. She was operated on at nine months old (knee and right hip, followed by left hip three weeks later). Has made a full recovery.

Very interesting reading, Barney and PJ have not been affected by either, thankfully.

Not sure if I ticked the boxes properly as I have 1 choc lab with OCD in back knee and she also has HD in both hips so ticked both appropriate boxes! I asked on another thread but does JohnW have any idea if there is a site where you can check if any of your labs ancestors have had HD or OCD as my breeder has not been in the slightest interested and i wonder if she was telling me the truth!
thanks Carolyn

Quite a paradox!

Hip score 0:0 is free of HD and elbows 0/0 free of OCD.

I have also submitted swabs to that survey Lucy. It’s all very interesting research!

Sadly not in the UK Carolyn. OFA in the US have a wonderful database of American dogs but we have nothing so good. There are the hip scoring records books which were compiled by Joan Macan before her untimely death. These carry a wealth of information. But of course it is not as “Available” as a web site.

Regards, John

I was asked to provide swabs from Willow last month or so back(hips18/40). Hope it will provide some useful data that can be used as a test for the future and hopefully more reliable than any tests requiring sedation or anaesthetic.
I hadnt realised that Pedigree were involved...............!

It would be nice to know a pup came from genetically sound parents- no guarantee as I am told environment also plays a part. I had planned to temporarily carpet any of the 'communal' areas used in our house had we gone on to have puppies as I have a lot of laminate and tiled areas.(I went on to have her speyed before her next season was due to avoid any 'accidents'!)
Pups doing the 'splits' etc when playing 'can' affect the hip outcomes. This was more likely to be the cause of Willows poor hip scores as she was with 2 of her litter mates and they were a little on the overactive side, jumping all over the place when they got excited- learning curve for next time I think!

have added to poll yellow without either HD or OCD,

Mya 18 mths black no signs of either

Bruce chocolate no signs of HD vet was worried when he was younger that he might have OCD, he was growing at a very fast rate (1 kilo each week Shocked ) running into a fence didnt help matters we tried to slow Bruces growth rate by putting him on a low protein diet, he was also put on rimadyl and fortiflex after running into fence as he was limping quite a bit, 1 year after the accident he still limped a bit after hard exercise, but now he shows no signs of limping at all, so vet no longer worried
