A cheap mat on the floor will cut the risk during the first crucial months when the bones are at their softest. Once Ruby gets to around a year her bones will be hardening up and the risk goes away.

Regards, John

Morgan was diagnosed with OCD at about 6months old and went on to have several operations. He had a limited working life but was a great friend. Sadly he passed away three weeks ago at the age of ten and a half with a tumour on the spleen.Asher my next lab was diagnosed with OCD at about 14 weeks has had an operation and has done a little bit of picking up in the field. He is a huge fun loving dog who now lives with three bitches who to date show no signs of OCD so keeping fingers crossed.
Anyone thinking of having a litter with their bitch or buying a new companion insist on hip elbow and eye screening, may save alot of heartache.

Hello Ash,

Really sorry to hear your sad news about Morgan, it sounds like he was a wonderful friend. Thanks for taking the time to answer this thread, our thoughts are with you.

It would be lovely to hear more about Asher and your girls .. do you have any pics?

Julie

Hi
Our Lab JD has just been diagnosed with HD. We saw the Xrays yesterday and the Vet told us it was very severe. As you can imagine the whole family is upset. We have been referred to Cedar Vetinary Group in Ringwood Dorset. The vet has told us that he will probably need a total hip replacement. We rang cedar to get a quote, which was £4,000. He is insured, but we have to pay 25%, which works out to £1,000 which sadly we cannot afford. We are desparate for any alternatives to a total hip replacement, we have looked on the internet and have seen various medicines and potions. Would appreciate any advice, has anyone been through a similar experience, where they have not chosen to have surgery and how has your dog been. Our vet told us that even though he is only 9 months old, within the year he will be in a very bad way. The last thing we want is for him to be in any pain, but at the same time, we want to have him in our lives as long as possible.

Hiya, im so sorry to hear about JD, i send you my best wishes, and hugs.

Sorry i cant offer any good advice, but could the RSPCA, or the PDSA help you find that £1000?

Or have you asked your vet if there is anyway that you could pay it in installments?

I hope that you sort something out soon xxx

I have 5 chocolates, none have HD or OCD, all are hip scored ranging from 7 to 14. Havent done elbows yet but intend to with next pup. I believe excercise and feeding have a lot ot do with these problems. Friends dog who has been raised totally on a raw diet has just got results of hip score which is 0/2, his parents were totals of 7 and 11. Now that I have changed to raw feeding it will be very interesting to see what score the next puppy I keep comes out at.
Will be interested to see results of this survey.

Hi there. Yes, an interesting survey. I wonder if there's a link between the colour of lab and the chance of HD. I couldn't actually answer the poll because I don't know if Willow is a HD sufferer or not. She was spayed today and while she was under anaesthetic the vet x-rayed her hips. There was a slight abnormality in the way they were formed but it was not bad enough to worry. The vet said it could turn into hip dysplasia, but the chances are it won't. She is black in colour, but her dad was a chocolate lab and her mum was a German Shepherd. I guess she hasn't got HD but is at mild risk.
