I'm so sorry to hear about Nala 
We had to let our little oldie go a year ago yesterday and she too was pts at home by the vet. We stayed with her and I held her as she went and after she had "gone" and kissed her goodbye and then we let the other dogs back in to see her. Like you, I felt that was important to do, and like Nero, they didn't seem to take much notice, but I don't remember them ever really looking for her either, so perhaps they just knew.
I hope in time you will find peace and be glad you got to say goodbye in the way that you did. It is a very painful experience, they are such wonderful creatures and it's a huge loss, so take your time to grieve and in time the happy memories will start to outshine the sad ones.
I will light a candle for Nala this evening.
