Just wondered what the options are of leaving my new puppy in our garage during the day???? There is no heater in there?? I am planning to set it's crate up in the conservatory for when we are home. Am I better to leave him in there while i'm out in the day too??

So many questions!! sorry!! just trying to plan everything before i go and visit our new pup! Cause i know as soon as i see him i'll definitly be bringing him home!!! All answers appreciated!!! Rolling Eyes

No definitely not in a garage nor in a conservatory where it could get very hot.

I would say use the crate in the conservatory. A garage with no heat would be freezing this time of year and unless u have an immaculate garage, then there are too many dangers in there.

hope that helps

Hi If you are intending to use a crate why not have it in the kitchen or utility room and keep it in the same place whether you are there or not? She may get confused if you move it around. Smile

The conservatory is not hot this time of year. The garage is clear and there is nothing the pup could get up to but was thinking it would be too cold. Also for training, thought it was best to keep him in a routine from the same place??

Also what age do the pups usually get there 2nd injection? and are they able to go out for walks after this??

We are thinking of converting our garage and making it so that there is access to outside runs, as long as you can do it where your dog is sheltered (from either heat or cold) and safe I don't see a problem with it.

How long are you planning on leaving the new pup in the garage or conservatory?

I read on your other thread that one day a week you work 9am-5pm...It doesn't matter where you leave him/her, Crate or garage, that is an awful long time for a dog to be alone, so you will need to arrange a dog walker/puppy sitter/etc, for that day at least. In fact even on the days you only work until 2.45pm, you will still need someone to come it during the day, especially for the first year.

It is recommended that dogs are not left for more than 4 hours per day and this is especially crucial during the puppy and teenage phases.

There are plenty of people out there with dogs that work full time, but their lives revolve around the dog and not only do they have someone in during the daytime to break the dogs day up, but they also put in huge amounts of time and effort when they are at home....I think you need to ask yourself if you can do this, especially as you have young children too.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but so many people make the mistake of thinking that a dog will "get used to" being alone, but so many pups then develop behavioural problems a few months down the line, then end up in rescue centres Sad . So please think through just how much time and money (as puppy sitters/dog walkers aren't cheap) you can give to this new family member......If you have already made plans for that and have already worked it all out, then good for you and I wish you all the best with your puppy. Very Happy

Gosh that is a long time to leave him/her. I get home every lunch time to let ours out, and would still do this if we ever convert the garage so it has access to outside runs.
It is good for a dog not to become too reliant on having human company around all the time, but you would be better definitely in this case if you can get home on a lunch time and/or get someone to pop round and let him/her out as Jules says.

I personally wouldn't leave a dog in a garage whilst out. I'm not sure about it being too cold as some dogs spend their entire lives outside with no ill effects but your dog would presumably be indoors with you when you were home and then be outside when your at work. It would be the fact that pup would be going from extreme warmth to extreme cold that I wouldn't like. Also dogs develop coats to suit their environment. The conservatory would be ok now but after feb/march it could get much too hot in the space of a couple of hours, and then you would have to move his bed elsewhere and retrain him to accept his new sleeping area. He could get very confused. Also as _jules_ pointed out, on the days when you are working all day, you will need somebody to pop in at least twice as pup will need feeding 4 times a day and it would be difficult and unacceptable to squeeze 3 feeds into an evening. Also 1 day a week his house training would go out of the window and the whole process would take longer. This could be confusing for him too. Forgive me if you've already thought of all this and made arrangements, but if so I would just go with the crate in the kitchen suggestion. He can't come to any harm and you know he will be warm and comfortable even on the coldest of days.
