   |

Hi,
Im seriosly thinking of gettng a second dog, i have a 1 year old black lab called Jess, who is wonderful, i really would like a chocolate lab as a companion for Jess but so many people have said choc's are much more hard work and really hyper, also that i should not get the same bread as i already have, does any one have any suggestions as at the moment im at a loss as to what to do. Im not thinking of getting one till at least June time, when i think Jess will be old enough and more grown up.

ooooo watching this with great interest, i am in the same boat, zak is 13 months and i would just soooo love a little brother for him choc or yellow i dont mind even antother black, it cant be much harder to look after two can it? The only thing that i worry about is that zak has been such a good dog so far, easy to train, doesnt chew, walks to heel etc.. it would be really lucky to find one just like him,

Well I only have the one but she is chocolate and she must be the most layed back pooch ever....she has her moments when out but don't they all.
The answer really is all down to training.
This is her favourit past time and she is now 2 1/2

Chocs are no different to any other colour... some are hyper and always on the go and some are almost horizontal!
And Why not get the same breed?!?! I'm getting my second lab in the spring and i've gone for another lab as i love them and want a second!
Good luck in finding your second dog. Will you get a pup or a rescue?

I have exactly the same worries, Jess has been such a good dog, easy to train, a little angel all round really, i worry she will be jealous, but i would so love another, black or Chocolate.

I would rather have a pup, i have had a rescue dog before, but the dog had so many problems we had to have him put to sleep in the end and that was heart breaking, so that has put me of rescue dogs im affraid.

trilogy, if jess is really friendly with other dogs now i wouldnt worry about jealousy, but like you i do worry about temperament, but i think this might be also down to breeding and seeing what the parents are like and what kind of pups they have already produced, am i anywhere near right any experts out there who can advice on temperament and breeding?

I think your right with breeding, But Jess's mum should be having a litter of Choc labs in the summer, which makes it even more tempting to get anouther from the same breeder.

Sounds like we're in the same situation, im still in touch with the breeder, luckily she only lives about 10 miles away, we take Jess back now and again to see her mum, but we keep in regular contact via email, she had a litter this summer by another one of her dogs, and i was tempted then, but she said they were not as chilled out as Jess, then she told us she was planning to breed Jess's mum again and hopefully have a litter in june/july so i thought i'd wait.
