Our two beautiful kakarikis (parokeets) were killed last night in their cage. Their cage has been in our garage and somehow something got in there last night and killed both of them (don't know what or how as the bars on the cage are less than an inch apart).
Poor Cinnamon and Hop-Along - "fly free at the bridge sweeties".
Oh dear sorry Vicky
Sorry to say it was probably young rats
Fly free lil ones !!
OH thinks it was a rat as well although I'm wondering if it could be a ferret/pole cat. OH has set a cage trap tonight to see if we catch anything. Something (presumably same culprit) had killed two of our fancy pigeons a few weeks ago, but despite the cage tray being set we didn't catch anytihng near the lofts. Lets hope we catch it soon.
Sorry to hear about your birds, i`d plumb for a rat too and not necassarily a young one!!, they can squeeze themselves thru almost any space when they want to.
Hope you catch it soon, do you keep the birds feed in the garage too?, if so thats what`ll be attracting them.

No the food is kept in a different outbuilding in big plastic bins, but the Kakarikis were always dropping bits of seed out of their cage so it was a never-ending job cleaning up after them (which in fairness OH used to do every single day).
He is quite upset as they were "his" birds, and it's not very nice finding their half-eaten bodies at all... Poor birds.
I'm normally the first to say that he can catch things in humane traps and I'll release them in a field, but this time to be truthful he can do what he pleases to whatever's done this!
