I finally brought home my black lab puppy this week! She's gorgeous and very well behaved for only 8 weeks old. I'm trying to get her hooked on Kong toys like Dr Ian Dunbar recommends, but she's more interested in playing than looking for food. I'm getting worried she's not really a lab at all! A lab that doesn't like food?!!

I would be really grateful for some helpful hints on getting her interested in eating, and chewing Kong toys in particular.

Many thanks Very Happy

Welcome to LF - cute photo!

My lab Corbie didn't like his kong when he was little either, no matter what was in it. Once he got a little bit older all that changed and he loves kongs now. His favourite kong filling is a slice of bread with chicken sandwich paste on it or bread soaked in gravy and frozen.

Don't worry too much about your puppys lack of interest in her food. My puppy didn't eat for about 4 days when we first bought him home. We tried everything and in the end he ate tiny portions of chicken a rice. However now he is 14 weeks old there is no stopping him eat. It takes some pups a while to settle into their new home, but she will. As getting her interested in her kong toy, again she will, when that appetite kicks in!

Same as above, wouldn't worry too much about lack of interest in a kong toy - Indie's favourite toy when she was a pup was a stuffed spider with a squeaker, cunningly named 'Mr Spidey', who she used to hump endlessly. Poor Mr Spidey ended up with only one eye and seven legs Sad but he certainly went out smiling Very Happy

She is a gorgeous pup.
Dont worry - she is still adjusting to her new home, and as the others have said - she will soon be VERY interested in food. Laughing

I'll echo what everyone has said.... don't worry too much... some pups seem to take a dip in appetite when they get to there new homes! Mine did... I obsessed about clever ways to get him to eat... and to no avail, he ate when he was ready and now there is no stopping him!

It took him a good week or two before he got the hang of a kong too... so just keep presenting the pup with it... with a few bits of kibble or whatever you are feeding in there.... and he will get the hang of it!
