Hi, I'm Jacqui and just thought I'd say hello to you all. We have a Golden Retriever puppy who is just 1 day older than Georgia's Dyson and her name is Sasha. I know she's not a Lab but thought I would introduce her anyway if that's ok? She is gorgeous but then I would say that!!
I am also after some advice if anyone can help me. Sasha suffers from car sickness and is sick quite a bit within 30 mins of any journey, we have taken her out a few times now and she has been sick every single time, other than that she is perfectly healthy. Can anyone recommend anything she could take that would help her as we would love to take her over to the Isle of Wight which is an 1 1/2 journey in the car. At the moment, the puppy training pads are coming in useful in the back of the car as she sits with me and is sick into those.
Hello Georgia's sister! Sasha looks lovely. Sorry I can't help with the car sickness, I know some dogs take a long time to grow out of it but I don't know anything you could do to help. Soz.
I love GR puppys, they're sooo cute, we have one at our dog club and she's so laid back
Is that Sasha in your avatar? She looks gorgeous!!!
Can't help with the car sickness, thankfully both of mine have never had that problem but i'm sure there will be others who could give you some advice on it

Hello Jacqui!! awww how cute is Sasha?! I've heard Golden retrievers are dogs that often get car sick when they are young.. but it could be a myth.
Other than taking really short journeys and even just putting her into the car and giving her treats then straight back out again a few times, so she doesn't anticipate that every time she gets in the car it moves, you could give her a few drops of rescue remedy on her tongue before the journey.
Try to make sure Sasha has an empty tum before each journey and take her on as many little, boring journeys as you can....2-3 times a day if poss....and only for a couple of mins at a time (so avoiding her getting into the habit of feeling sick or dreading feeling sick).
I'm sure anticipation has a lot to do with car sickness in dogs....They either have excitement anticipation, in other words they get over excited because they know their journey will end in something really good, or they have fear anticipation, so they worry about arriving a their destination because they have gone somewhere horrid/scary before (like the vets). Of course if they regularly vomit then this increases the fear and dread, so increases the feelings of sickness (a vicious circle). Either way it is best to try and avoid the anticipation, so make the car trips short and sweet and very, very boring.
Having had one dog that got so excited that she would vomit within minutes everytime we went in the car for years, I try to never let myself get into that situation again. So for the first few weeks I take the pups out just round the block every day, so they only ever arrive back where they started...how boring is that....but so far it has worked
And where's my manners....Welcome to LF Georgias sister.
Thanks to all of you!! You are a nice friendly bunch, will try the short journeys when hubby can, he works in London which is a hundred miles away and is there most days, other times he works at home as I do but I don't drive which is a pain!! I wonder if she associates the car as the time she left her mum, she was sick then twice on the way back to Trowbridge from Tetbury which was about a 45 minute journey. She was sick twice on Saturday and then went to some woods and she was in her element, getting covered in thick mud and was not sick on the way back (mind you, it was only a 10 minute journey home) . We're hoping to go to the island this Saturday so might have to ask my friend to have her for the day (no shortage of dogsitters here since we got her), I hate to see her suffering like that!!
G didn't tell me you had got a pup.....will have to have a word with that sis of yours she tells me everything else lol
I have to agree with Jules on the sickness thing I took Fudge on loads of little journeys before making the trip to my mums which is 41/2 hrs on a good day and can be 7 on a bad. We also gave her Bachs Rescue Remedy which I think works wonders for stressful situations.
