Reading the post by Florence I thought I would pass along this warning. We are never too old to learn, and in all my years in dogs I’ve never heard about problems with Sweetcorn, so it was a bit of a coincidence that I received from a Borzoi friend in Spain which included this paragraph just at the time when Florence was having problems with it:-

Sarah ,the vets nurse I worked with has just lost her 4 yr old lab to torsion due to Sweetcorn. There is a risk with Sweetcorn, well known to borzoi owners , her borzoi had a few kernels , the lab took a whole cob and chewed on it. Blocked the guts. No one who knows their breed has torsion potential would give their dog Sweetcorn. Sweetcorn comes out as it went in .....very hard to digest.

So there you are. Sweetcorn might not be poisonous, but add it to your list as a big No No!

Regards, John

Good to know . Perhaps this could get added to the sticky about poisonous food.

Thanks for this. I am assuming a few kernels are okay providing the cob is not given?

I only had corn on the cob a few weeks ago and let my doggies chew on the cobs - luckily they did not eat any, they did what they do with cardboard, bite some off and spit it out Shocked

Thanks John Smile

After reading it on florences post i mentioned sweetcorn to my friend who i have seen give her dog the cobs to chew on.

Then she confessed she had given Basil one the night before he had started with an odd poo pattern (which lasted 2 weeks) it eventually progressed onto persistent diahorrea for him and the vet said he had eaten and passed something that had caused a nasty inflammation to his intestine.

He is all better now but I am convinced it must have been the cob and feel lucky that he chewed it so thoroughly.

I had never given him one but had no idea they would be such a problem.

I think this clearly refers to sweetcorn COBS, the tough centre of the plant. Although sweetcorn kernals, the little yellow bits, have very tough and indigestible skins, I am not aware that they have any harmful effects. They will simply pass straight through!

I wonder if the dog in Spain ate a sweetcorn which had been left to dry. Many people here dry them out and store them that way. They are used as an animal food in that way for goats etc.

I don't think anyone should be anxious about the used of sweetecorn in a dog food, it will be in a processed form and used to add bulk and vitamins.
