Greetings from across the pond. My name is Ed, I own two dogs. One is golden retreiver, the other a yellow lab. Russell is the golden, he is eight years old, with a enlarged heart. The vet gave him five years to live. He has outlived the vet. Buddie is the Lab, what a wonderful animal!!!!!!! I took him to another vet because he was having limping problems. Buddie is now ten months old. The vet exray the leg. bad news. buddie has dysplsaia in the both shoulders and elbows. She told me their is nothing than can be done for him. But to excercise him daily and give him glosomin and condrotin which i give him daily. So i will be hanging in there for the time being. That is my dilemma for now. Any words of wisdom would be welcome.
I live in Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Amish country. A great place to live. So that is about all I have for now, I want to thankyou all for having such a wonderful forum on Labs. It is awesome to say the least.

Ed from Pa

Hi Ed and welcome to LF, good on Russell for outliving the vet!! Very Happy , they have a habit of making us look stupid at times Very Happy

Sorry to hear Buddy has Dysplaysia in his shoulders and elboes, I know there`s a few members whose pups have had ED (Elbows) and have had successful ops on them, maybe she meant that it wasn`t bad enough to warrant an op at the moment?, does Buddy seem happy enough in his daily wanderings or does he show signs of discomfort?.

I`m sure the members here whose dogs have or have had ED will be along shortly to talk to you Smile

Thankyou for the reply back Mary, the vet said that it would cost too much to have him operated on. The vet thinks the hips are a problem to.
So now it is a wait and see time. Yes he does have pain in the front limbs, he bites the joints and makes grumbly noises. I have buddie on a temperpedic foam, it is a memory foam. He spends most of his time on that. In the morning he is raring to go, but come around late afternoon he likes to rest.

Awww poor lad, I`m assuming you don`t have him insured?, its something a lot of people do here and that then pays for any treatment the dog may need although of course you do hope not to use it. I don`t know if there is dog insurance in the US, but it`d be too late for Buddy now cos the vet already has a record of his condition.

Does he like swimming?, most Labs do and if you can get Buddy to swim that should help build his muscles up and strengthen his legs including his hips, like us its good all round exercise and impact free Smile

Hi and welcome sorry to hear about buddies condition. Mary has given you good advice there about swimming an excellent form of exercise with no/low impact for the painful joints, it will really help build up his muscles which will in turn help his condition. Quite a few labs on here have had surgeries on their elbows and hips as a result of dysplasia take a look at this website it has more info on HD and other things related to labrador health www.lab-health.co.uk

I appreciate all who responded to my cry.Yesterday morning i could not take the pain anymore. I took Buddie to the vet to be euthenized and creamated. It was as very sad day in my life. But it was the best for Buddie, his pain is gone forever. Buddie was such a big part of my life.
I am in the process of getting another Lab. I checked with a breeder close by and they will have a litter by valentines day - that would be in february of 08. They are an excellent breeder, they are registered AKC which to me means nothing! But they are also registered Aca, OFA< DNA, their females are OFA "excellent" and Males as "good".
Again thankyou all for your responses,

Ed From Pa
