Hi
I was wondering if anyone could advise on the use of a slip lead.
I haven't ever used one myself - but think it may be necessary for training.
Please advise

i use a slip lead on zak, its easy on when you just cant trust he wont run off and you need to make sure he stays put, and also the minute he starts to walk to fast for me it stops him as he would rather not have anything tight round his neck, so its an excellant tool for heel walking,

You do have to be a little careful when using a slip lead or they can tighten up and not loosen off enough if you use them the wrong way round.

You need to hold the lead with the slip loop open so that lead part coming off the slip ring is at the top, then put it over you dogs head so that the lead pulls off from the top, sort of across the top of his neck, not from underneath. That way it doesn't over tighten.

Sorry I'm not very good at describing it (you may have noticed)

We use a slip lead on Leo. Yes you have to make sure they are the right way around, and also I would recommend making sure you get one that falls back into place freely. We got quite a thick rope one for Leo but it's not very flexible/plyable, so we've not got a slightly thiner one which is much better.

I have nothing against slip leads.....but I can't see the difference between one of them and a choke chain...yet a lot of people slate them. Confused

My training school won't allow you to use either, as with both it is all too easy to get wrong. Wink

We don't use a slip lead on Jet as a walking lead but I do have slip leads hanging by the front and back doors so I can pop one on him before I open the door to visitors as Jets doesn't wear a collar indoors.

For us, Shadow walks a lot better on a sliplead than one clipped on his collar. I think it's probably because it feels loose when walking correctly, dunno. Wan't Barbara Woodhouse an advocate for choke chains? If you're buying one, give it a good pull in both hands, if it stretches, go for another one. Also, make sure that the ring slips freely on the lead - some of them don't Shocked
