Hello everyone,
My name is Helen and I am the proud owner of my baby girl, Luca. She has just turned one, a chocolate and she is a nutter. I live with boyfriend in Godalming in Surrey with our princess.
I need training tips. She is a monster, a loveable one but a monster all the same.
Not sure how to add a pic but I will try.
I have been a member of a US site for the last year but figured about time I got on an English one as training tips are always different.
what kind of training tips are you after? The best thing to do is browse through the different sections to see if someone has already posted recently about that subject and if not post a new thread in the appropriate topic!
Thanks for replies and compliments, of course. Luca just had an operation, she dislocated her knee. It's been 6 weeks and she got the sign-off on Monday from the surgeon, all is well. The reason I ask for advice on training is because since not exercising over the last 6 weeks (we were only allowed maximum of 5 mins, 6 times a day), she has become a little frustrated and not behaving the way she should.
She has always been a jumper. I have used the "sit" command - didn't work, turning back option - didn't work, blocking her by turning sideways - didn't work. Just some more thoughts really. She isn't too bad with me and boyfriend but it's other people really.
She is very excitable, that's why I call her a monster. She loves people but can sometimes be too much, she isn't a cute puppy anymore and weighs around 78lbs (also needs to drop a few pounds since op - working on that).
What else? She is a puller. We have used a halti, prong (I'm probably going to get told off about that but it's a US thing, they all use them and used correctly, I didn't hurt her), etc. etc. Nothing really sticks. I use treats lots and it seems to me that she will obey me if offered a treat but if not offered a treat, she sometimes ignores me. She loves other dogs and if off lead (been a while since op) and she sees a dog or person really, she bounds over and is jumpy and she won't come back to me. Those sort of issues really. Probably typical lab issues.
hi and welcome
yep same as most of the labs on here but there are some really nice people and some excellant lab handlers so i am sure you will gets lots of help and advise, my zak at the moment is going through the "kevins" stage so afraid i cant be of much help
lovely looking dog there , intelligent look in her face.
only thing I can say about the pulling and maybe some people wont like it is use force . I use a gundog slip to train them to walk to heel and not pull, a good few sharp tugs makes them realise they cant get away with it. I wouldnt use a choker chain though. Its taken me a day to sort out Diesel.
Not sure why my posts don't go on the main page, still trying to figure this site out and actually get to know some of you.
Another picture of my little girl (not so little now). How do you post more than one?
Shaun - you say a gundop slip. Never even heard of that. I will try anything though. When we first got Luca at about 9 weeks, we took her to puppy classes and she did very well. Since then she has been diagnosed with knee dysplasia - very mild case and then she dislocated her knee when she was running around being crazy, I call it "butt tucking" so the training hasn't gone to plan. We got a trainer in before she did her knee in on a one to one basis as it's difficult for us to do weekly classes, away lots. Anyway, trainer told us use a halti collar when not trainer her, i.e. quick walks or when dog walker with her. Whilst she was recovering, we walked her up and down our road on a normal collar with treats and she was doing so well, walking right by my side or behind slightly (as Cesar Milan says). Last week we took her somehwere different as her recovery period was nearly done and she was horrible. Pulling and choking and sniffing everything in sight and trying to say hello (jumpig) at everyone. I really thought we had cracked it, but obviously not! What's all that about? We brought treats as well but she wasn't interested.
I am going to have a look around this site for tips and see where I go with that.
