Hi Guys and Girls!

Just thought I would say hello to you other forum members!

I am not currently a lab owner but am hoping to be in the not so very near distant future. My girlfriend and I are in the process of trying to find the right puppy.

We have decided on a name, colour and sex but are very new to this. We are really looking for advice on where, when and what is the best way to go about getting ourselves a puppy.

If anyone has any advice on what to look for or anything of any real use then please let me know.

Looking forward to many years of owenership and contributions to the forums.

Cheers

Nobber aka Paul

Welcome Paul
If you look on site there is plenty of guidance for getting a pup.
Have you done your homework on labradors? You will get lots of good advice here from everyone.
Labs are gorgeous dogs - very lively most of the time, love the mud and water and love people. Yes Im already smitten - on the third lab and already hankering after another.

Hi Claire!

I'm in the process of doing all my homework right now. One item on the list was to join here to help me with the research.

We currently have a bit of a zoo here at our house. We have a 20yr old cat and 5 rabbits, oh and 2 children!! The rabbits live outside in sheds and not indoors.

The lab would be an addition to our family once our lovely cat has passed on. Does that sound cruel?! Anyway we are looking for information on what is the best way to go about getting a lab puppy.

Obviously there are specific breeders who are purely in the business of producing dogs. There are also people who have litters in smaller numbers and I'm wondering if what the advantages and disadvantages to each one is.

If the puppy is not KC registered is that a bad thing or is that only really needed for breeding and showing purposes. Our lab would purely be a well behaved and well exercised house pet.

Cheers

Paul

Welcome to LF Very Happy

This guide will help you
http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/breederselection.html

Health tests are very important - hips, eyes, elbows - and it's likely any place producing numerous litters at a time and selling them cheaply (or because they are not KC reg, which only costs £12 per pup I think, so no excuse for not registering really!) are to be avoided if you want a pup who's been given the best start in life.

I'm sure others can give more info than me. Wink

Hi Karen,

Just had a good read through the link you sent and found it extremely useful. I'm going to investigate a local proper breeder and get my name down on a waiting list.

Does anyone know of a reputable breeder in the West Berkshire/North Hampshire/South Oxford area?

Cheers

Paul

Hello and welcome Paul.

My labby is 16 weeks tomorrow and NOT KC registered, he was an 'accident' and is the product of brother and sister getting a bit frisky but they are both KC registered and have very good hip scorings etc and he is very healthy, we gave what could be considered a misfit a good home and we are all very happy (even though he has weird paws).

Sure you will find lots of useful info on here - where abouts are you based? I am in N Hants, we had a great GT the weekend, when your pup is old enough you should come along!

Take care
Helen

Thanks for the welcome guys! I've been reading the forum and other websites all afternoon! I'm getting a better idea and clue about what I need to do.

Watch this space for the pups arrival!
