Just out of interest, due to the amount the insurance company charges would you insure your dog that is 9 years old ? Or would you put that amount into a savings account for a rainy day that you hope never comes.
the reason I am asking Vicki, is that I know a lot of people that stop insuring at that age when the premiums triple, and put money aside instead. Thinking that if anything is going to go wrong healthwise it would have, but I expect that the type of problems just change. Like they are more unlikely to get HD, but arthritis is more prone.
Personally I know I wouldn't end up putting the money aside! I can see the logic in that train of thought, but even if you did put some money aside how far would it go in vet's bills if needed? Say £40 a month - would only give you £1000 after 2 years - would that be enough to pay for an emergency operation? Personally I'd prefer the peace of mind of having the insurance - although I would possibly be more tempted with the "put money aside" route if I had a few oldies!
I would insure! You never know what is round the corner and even simple blood tests or xrays can set you back £100+, also what happens if the dog got a chronic illness like kidney problems where by they need special food or diabetes whereby needed injections daily, all covered by insurance but costly to fork out for monthly long term.
That is just my opinion but I am a "BELT AND BRACES TYPE OF GIRL"
I totally agree, it never crossed my mind to stop insuring Sam when he hit 7 which was the age that his insurance co decided he was officially old and changed the rules....
I had a friend that did just that had her dog insured until he was about 7 then decided as there had been no claims it was a waste of money, cancelled the policy and within 3 months he had started to have long terms health problems.....
the only comment I would make is that Barney referred to the food being covered by insurance, it is my understanding that mnay of the insurance companies do not cover food at all so that if your dog is put on a prescription diet you pay for it yourself. i am lucky Neo's insurance co pay the difference between the cost of ordinary food and the prescription food but the vets are always quite surprised to find that they cover this....
Nope I've never covered my oldies and my Tara hasn't been insured since her policy ended at the age of 8.
Yes, she did have one very expensive accident at the age of 10 and I had to use my Credit Card to foot the bill but I would rather do that than line an insurance companys pocket with such a ridiculously large amount every month, when it may never be needed.
Just as in the old days, if the dog needs treatment, then I'll find a way of paying it, the dog won't go without.
To be fair I only have Mojo covered anyway....none of my cat, rabbits or GPs are covered....I could have shares in a company if I insured the whole lot.
doesn't it depend on the dog? With Sam although he was insured it was about a break even job at the end, with probably me slightly on the losing end but with Neo I am quids in each month he costs me a fortune and I get most of the cost of his prescription food back which alone every 3 weeks saves me about £30
My parents stopped insuring their dogs (with pet plan) when they got to around 9/10 as they were paying higher and higher premiums and getting less and less back, that's if they could even claim for the problems. In the end they just paid when things were needed... and they did need various drugs each month for a few years until they died and ops but tbh it probably still came to less than if they had been ploughing money into an insurance company.
