Okay all,
We had Walk #1 at the Wirral
Walk #2 is at John's place on 20th Oct
For Walk #3 may I suggest Parbold Hill & Fairy Glen????
I'm about to have a couple of months enforced rest after an operation, so I won't be able to do any Proper Walks until early 2008, so I vote we do this walk on the last weekend before my operation so I can have a farewell walk with you all!
So, how does either Saturday Nov 3 or Sunday Nov 4 sound to you all??
Description of the walk:
This walk starts from a rail station so easy access for public transport users. Traverses the towpath of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal before climbing to the top of Parbold Hill and returning by a wooded glen (indeed, the Fairy Glen!) on its way back to the station. Although there are no facilities on the route apart from the Wiggin Tree, there are shops and pubs etc in both villages.
Features: Hills or Fells, River, Pub, Wildlife, Birds, Flowers, Great Views, Restaurant, Waterfall, Woodland
Length : 4 miles
Duration : 2 hours
Meet : Appley Bridge train station WN6 9AE
Time : Trains arrive on the half-hour from both directions, so may I suggest either 12:30 or 13:30?
This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
For anyone who hasn't been on a Proper Walk before, can I suggest that you please:
- Bring adequate footwear. Hiking Boots are preferable.
- Bring adequate clothing. Waterproofs are usually recommended with our lovely British weather, particularly in November. I always layer my clothing so that I can remove layers as I warm up, and then put them back on again as I get cooler.
- Bring water, for both yourself & your dog - our dogs get REALLY thirsty on these walks
- Proper Walks are all going to be long country walks and are probably not suitable for very young (<1 year old) or very old dogs. If you've any questions about the suitability of a walk for your dog, please PM me and I'll do my best to describe the walk in detail for you.
Anyone up for this walk?
Fairy Glen is *beautiful*

hi ness, i would love to come on this walk with you, i have done it many times and can vouch for the views, parbold is a lovely village, unfortunatly that is my weekend in work i would be off the following weekend, would be nice if you can change it if it fits in with your op.
my best wishes for a speedy recovery, so we can at last meet at a gt.
fledgling and zak
in reply to snowpines, yes there is ample opportunity for off lead, but the walk does take in a bit of the canal towpath which while lovely its hard to get dogs out of if like zak they launch themselves in
Hehehehe Harriet, I honest to god wasn't having a dig!! But glad you now have a fab opportunity to wear in your boots I'll be catching the train up as well, so will text you closer to the time and arrange to be on the same train if you like??
Sheila, I'm soooooooo sorry that you're working that weekend!! What a bummer. No chance of switching? Or what hours are you working, can we work around your hours? Seems a terrible waste to have a GT so close and yet you can't come But unfortunately I cannot have it the weekend after, I'll still be in hospital, my op is on Thurs 8th, and I won't be coming on any GTs for a few months afterwards. Well, let me rephrase that... I can come on fun GTs after about a month, as long as Charlie can come with me to handle the dog.
Snowpines, I'm really sorry that I didn't spell it out in the first post, I'll go and edit that post a little so that it's a bit clearer.
This is a 4 mile, 2 hour walk.
Personally, I don't think that it is suitable for an 8 month old, I think it's far too long... I think a 2 hour fun GT where all the dogs do is run about & play for 2 hours is one thing... but a 4 mile hike is something completely different.
But that is definately your call and I am certainly not about to tell anyone how to raise their dog, I can only make suggestions.
If he were 11 months old I'd probably keep my mouth shut, but at 8 months they are still such babies...
I would love to have done this walk but unfortunately have other plans that weekend. Remember the days when my grandparents used to take me to the Wiggin Tree for lunch - long time ago now, but its a lovely area. Hope you all have a great walk.
