OK, sorry for swearing, but 'recurring ear infection' just wasn't tempting enough for most people to respond.
There is such a lot of controversy surrounding this drug, and such a lot of conflicing advice - Indie has been prescribed a course for seven days, and (after some painful maths) we worked out she has been prescirbed approx 35mg less per day than the maximum. The prescription relates to a recurring ear infection (hence the snappy title of the first post), but I am concerned our vet didn't advise us about the controversy surrounding this drug. I have phoned them since and they advise they have used it in a wide variety of cases for 15 years, with only two adverse reactions in that time.
Any advice gratefully received, thanks to anyone who posted on the recurring ear infection thread.

I know there is controversy surrounding use of rimadyl. I am not an expert, but I can say that when Charlie was given the occasional shot of it (also for a recurring ear infection) he had no problems. Was a bit drowsy for a few hours afterwards maybe, but otherwise did not react.

Others may be able to explain a bit better, but perhaps problems relate more to its long term use??

I think if you google-search LF on Rimadyl there is quite a long thread which will come up. I have little experience, but can say that it seems vets rarely explain all of the possible side-effects of the drugs.

I have a feeling Rimadyl was Carprofen, which used to be sold as a human painkiller, but was withdrawn (don't know why). I think its properties are much the same a s Ibuprofen, which is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflamatory Drug (NSAID).

Metacam may be an alternative painkiller, especially if for long term use. I have heard of it but have never had to use it.

Helen.

Don't know anything about controversy about Rimadyl but do know Barney reacted to it, became very aggressive, was advised to stop by vet and she thought it was because it had red meat in it to make it pet friendly and Barney was sensitive to red meat...but never to the extent of his behaviour on it.

Why was Carprofen removed from the shelves for human use? I haven't a clue really. Confused

According to Wikipedia, apparently on commercial grounds, perhaps the market was flooded with NSAIDs?
Here is Wikipedia link for anyone interested- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carprofen

Oh dear, sorry you are so upset. I did not see your original post, so can only reply to this.

Our experience of this drug was when BJ was prescribed it for his bad elbow/shoulder, the first time.
He did not tolerate it at all, and we had to take him off very quickly. Our vet was not surprised at BJ's response, so it can't be that unusual that some dogs have a bad reaction.

You say that your dog has been prescribed this because of a recurring infection, but we were told that this drug is really only a pain killer, so is he/she taking an AB as well?.

Best wishes for your dog.

Just wanted to add, if you decide not to give Indie the Rimadyl, please speak to your vet again so he doesn't go without pain relief. I'm sure you would anyway, just wanted to say it Very Happy

It's also an anti-inflammatory, I was informed by the vet the preference for Rimadyl over Metacam in this instance was because Rimadyl would target the ear better than Metacam - Indie has been on Metacam without any side effects before. She is due to go in for a mild sedation, ear exam & swabs next week, I'm phoning the vet again tomorrow to see if the Rimadyl is necessary because they need to bring the swelling down in her ear for the exam? Or whether its just for the pain relief side of things??

Interested myself to hear any opinions as Happy has been given this tonight for her big patch of wet eczema... have to say she seems quite settled now and will just give the AB's prescribed tomorrow and keep an eye on her to see if she REALLY needs the Rimadyl aswell or not, was only vaguely aware of the controversy...
