Being incredibly thick I would love to use a rope slip lead but the one that purchased at the Windsor show looks incredibly fragile, I reckon one lunge towards someone else and it will snap - where can I purchase a nice strong one from?

Someone did tell me that the best way was to make your own by purchasing rope from a ships chandlers and splicing your own but you had to get the ring round the right way - I am honestly not capable of this - so any ideas where to get such a rope?

Many thanks..

The ones seen at shows are often designed as a "Show Lead" and is very thin so as not to intrude in the outline of the dog. My rope lead is 10mm diameter and I could moor the QE2 with that! Wink

Quest gun dogs (thanks for that Ian) have a rope that is 8mm thick - would that do? And would you recommend natural rope (my instinctive preference) or the poly one?

Nelly1971 how did you get on with the 1/2 check, we went to training last night and they said that the way Molly pulls on her lead she is going to or already will have damaged her voice box that's why she makes a funny croaking noise and they advised me to get a 1/2 check and I wondered how you got on.

Wilkinsons do them for £1.99 in various colours, they will hold an Elephant of the need arose!

Sorry for the rant, but far too many people on this thread seem content to have a lab (Or other dog) pull them around on the lead, surely you must agree that this is unacceptable?

I train an awful lot of dogs (and handlers) in a year and almost without exception get them to use a slip lead (I do and will continue to use check chains on some dogs, especially those we train for protection work)

However, for our pups I teach them to heel "free" before introducing them to on lead heel work, makes life so much easier.

Regards

Mike
