Does anyone have any advice on chokers? Not sure if they are a good or bad thing.

Thanks.

Hi Helen

Personally I don;t think a full choker chain is a good idea as there have been cases of dogs being choked to death by them and I think that they are probably very uncomfortable.

Half checks have been recommended as they if pulled tight are uncomfortable making the dog think twice about pulling (not that THAT theory ever worked with Neo!) but don't do any harm.

Currently Neo is sporting his beautiful Clara's Collars autumn creation - watch out world, about to post piccies if I can but get any!! - which is a flat collar with any form of chain...

To be honest I think Choke chains are OK but only if they are used correctly. They are not meant to be used to strangle the dog within, instead a quick "check" should be enough to get them back in line. I prefer half-checks, but again, I think it depends whose hands they are in!

I wouldn't use one. I have a dog who sometimes seems determined to strangle himself, so I found headcollars less risky.

A half-check is a better compromise than a choker chain if you want to go down that route. I am not a great expert, so would not have trusted myself to use a choker correctly.

Helen.

How things change...............with my first two labs they both had full chokes and walked beautifully on them and i never managed to strangle them Very Happy (that was over 20 years ago now)
Baxter and Maggie have half chokes and all three have flat collars. Personaly don't think they make the slightest bit of difference as Baxter unless on his own or in a halti will pull like a steam chain with it on. Rolling Eyes It all boils down to one thing training, training and more training Laughing

Check chain, sounds so much nicer than choke!!
not my favourite, prefer the half checks myself

Have heard of nerve damage in the neck being caused by the use of a full check chain!

Yes, I agree with this Vicki, and would add that I was always told its supposed to be the noise the chain makes that corrects the dog, rather than the tightening of the chain around its neck...

I've been told to use one with Jet but to be honest I don't have the heart Im so scared of hurting him because I really don't know how to use one. All the dogs I see on them appear well controlled but it is probably the case that the owner has experience in using them. Unless you have someone who can demonstrate I'd leave well alone but thats a personal opinion.

Kind Regards

Paula
