Hi

Chiltern has had re occurring ear infections for over a year and fingers crossed it's under control.
The original infection never cleared due to me struggling getting the drops in Chiltern hated it!

Chiltern's infection is fungal and this was confirmed with an ear swap, I believe there are different types of fungal infections and the test shows what drops will work on removing the infection. In Chiltern's case there were three drops that we can and have used.

The infection at it's worst resulted in brown gunge, however don't think all is well when this has gone as the infection may still be lurking. The vet let me look down the ear maginifying thing and his ear was coated in a white lining and we needed to try and remove this.

I have only once ever been prescribed tablets, these were oxycare and this is an antibiotic. He did have a shot of painkiller with his ear wash.
Chiltern is on daily ear cleaning now(just in the one ear), no drops. I can now easily tell when his ear drum swells and if so I will start back on the drops and ask the vet to have a look down his ear.

So in order to get the eardrum swelling down have you tried 3 times a day ear cleaner at different times to your drops? The massage is the most important part, has your vet shown you how to do this to get the most gunge out?

I am no vet or nurse this advise is what I have done with the help and support of my vets. Don't give up as it won't go away on it's own.

I personally woudn't be happy giving anymore than a shot of painkiller if this is really required. My vet only wanted to do the ear wash and swab as a last resort and when Chiltern had it done and within a week the ear was full up with gunge again.
The right drops to clear the infection and constant ear cleaning is the only thing that works for Chiltern.

You have my sympathy but do what's right for you, tell your vet the concerns you have and ask if there is an alternative.

Karen

Hi Karen,
I'm pleased the vet are going to swab and get to the root cause, and we aren't currently administering any drops until they've done the tests, it was our last vet that used to just prescribe cannaural.
I really do want to get the problem cleared up and Indie's ears do obviously get sore with this, we do clean her ears and massage the cleaner in etc, and she's fairly tolerant of this. And we do get large amounts of gunk some times and nothing at other times.
My big problem at the moment is (you may not have seen my other attention grabbing post) that they prescribed Rimadyl for pain relief and to reduce the swelling, without telling my OH any of the possible side effects or giving him any cautionary advice. I have made up my mind to take her back to the vet this morning and have her swapped onto metacam, which she has had previously with no problems, not only am I worried about Rimadyl but I'm not happy with the way the vet prescribed it without the necessary advice.
I'm very annoyed about this as we've had prolems with vets in our area and I thought I had found one that I could trust, particularly as we are half way through health checks for the girls as we intend to breed from them. Our last vet left Indie in agony for over a week with a completely torn cruciate and (unknown to them) torn meniscus pad, so I'm disappointed to be let down by the new vet. The vet before that killed one of my budgies, so its a bit of a saga I'm afraid!
Anyway, thanks for the advice, lets hope the swabs go well and they can actually diagnose and treat the problem properly.

There are lots of positive posts as well as negative regarding Rimadyl, but for me there are just too many gaps in why seemingly healthy animals react so badly to it, there are many more reports of this happening with Rimadyl than metacam, and yet no reason why?!
Just got back from the vet btw, they refunded for the Rimadyl tablets left & prescribed metacam, which is a bit more expensive but peace of mind is priceless!
