Evening all!
I wonder if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having with my 13 week old Springer pup Obi?
He was weaned onto Royal Canin and ever since weaning his stools have varied from almost normal (usually first thing in the morning) to outright diarrhoea, usually towards the evening, in between and most of the time they are sloppy and unformed. Otherwise he's a normal happy pup, good weight and growing well.
At about 10 weeks old I changed him to James Wellbeloved, thinking that the Royal Canin wasn't agreeing with him. This hasn't made any difference
The other evening he vomited up what looked like his entire days worth of biscuits, pretty much undigested, so I'm wondering if it could be dry biscuits in general that don't agree with him, has anyone else found that their dog can't cope with kibble of any variety? Also, does anyone know how long kibble sits in the stomach for on average?
This evening he is worse than ever, I'm cooking some chicken for him and will feed him that and rice for a few days, I guess if he's normal on that it must be food that's the problem, he also has the habit of eating everything off the floor he comes accross
So just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or comments? While I'm not worried as such it is quite frustrating! He's been checked by a vet (we live with one ) and he's fine otherwise.

I imagine it could be possible the little guy`s tummy hasn`t adjusted fully to JWB as yet, I assume that as you live with a vet and as I recall you are/were a vet nurse that you did the change over on a gradual basis
Its also possible that Obi is allergic or has an intolerance to one or more ingredients in the kibble, many of then use the same things, but it may be worth looking at the flavour ie: chicken, my friends GSD can`t tolerate anything at all to do with chickens including eggs!.
Thanks Sam, no I specifically got the lamb and rice flavour of JWB as the RC was chicken flavour, so not really any common ingredients.
It's most frustrating as all his brothers and sisters are fine, I feel like I've done something wrong but don't know what!

Yep, did the changeover slowly over a week or so. I feel daft asking this question as being a vet nurse you'd think I'd know, but as you might be aware, nutrition is not a subject well covered in vet or vet nurse training
My other two are raw fed and I'm tempted to just try him on raw but I'm reluctant as it can cause loose tums to start off with and I don't want him to be even worse!

I`d see how is on the chicken and rice your doing for him, then maybe try the kibble again, if he goes back to sloppy poop I think you`ll have your answer and poor Obi will have to live on fresh chicken for the rest of his life!!!! , I`m sure this`ll upset him no end!, thats if he`ll eat kibble again after fresh chicken
A vet once told me that it takes a dog on average 8 hours to digest a meal, I guess that why some only feed once a day, so, it`d be fairly slow moving this the animal`s digestive system
My Fudgie always had a delicate tum when he was a pup.
I tried JWB and Burns they both made him a bit sicky and runny. I switched to wet food and he was fine but soon he was just picking out the mixer biscuits and leaving the food so I had to find and alternative.
I had a chat with the vet and (although they are supposed to recommend certain foods) he suggested I try Skinners. He had found it was the only food he could feed across the board to all his dogs (from Labs. to Yorkies).
I tried the health & Vitality type and both dogs have been happy on it since.
I didn't know at the time but it also works out quite a bit cheaper too (no VAT i think).
Thanks Jo, I'll have to see if I can source some Skinners puppy food, the problem is I live in Jersey and it can be hard to find some foods if the petshops don't stock it. I obviously don't want to chop and change foods but if there is one out there that might suit him it would be good to find it

My local pet shop gets it for me in 15kg bags now (they do sell it in smaller sized bags though).
There was only one place I knew sold it which was quite a journey for me to get there. I asked at the pet shop on the off-chance they'd heard of it, she checked her suppliers catalogue and found all the varieties there and I just order the week before I need it. It may be worth asking at smaller, independent shops rather than large pet stores.
Skinners have a website with loads of info on it regarding ingedients etc. it sounds like a no-nonsence, no messing kind of food made originally for working dogs. They may be able to supply some samples for you to try.
