Hi Board, My name is Sandra and I just bought a 7 week old Yellow Labrador Saturday past (10/6-07) and since I had him (his name is Lucky) he scratches his neck or a part of his body on and off. I have examined him and he has no fleas or ticks. Can someone tell me what is going on if they have had that same problem or know of someone who has? Thanks for your info. Confused

Pud is pretty scratchy i think like us they occassionally have itches! When i first brought Pud home i was sure he mus have fleas as he seemed to be scratching all them time, my vet said that it may have been the change from a relatively cold environment to central heating which was causing dry skin. She recommended evening primrose oil in his food and it cleared up quickly x

have you put a collar on him?? as when they are new to a pup they tend to scratch where their collar lies ALOT for the first few weeks!! Other than that it could be fleas I suppose if he hasn't been treated? best of luck with the little guy and welcome to the forums please do come back and let us know how he is getting along.

I haven't put a puppy collar on him yet because the adoption agency that I purchased him from said that the vet will tell me about a liquid that I should use instead of the collar (she said its more effective). I have a vet appt. for him on this Saturday (10/14/07) to check on his stiches from being neutered and will ask them about it. I will let you know what they said.

Thanks,
Sandra, Alton and Lucky Razz

have you put a regular collar on.... not a flea collar... just a regular neck collar. My pup scratched incessantly at that from the minute we put it on till we took it off!

Apart from the medical reasons, scratching can be a sign of stress/confusion - particularly in puppies and can often be seen in puppy classes when they are learning new commands and aren't sure what is being asked of them. If that's the case, as he grows in confidence it will cease Wink

On another note -

Have I misread this, or has your vet just neutered a 7 week old puppy? Did they give any particular reason for doing it this young?

To Freebarn: I have not put a flea collar on him yet, we just had a regular lead collar on him and that may be what has him itching. I am going to try that and I will let you know how we make out. Wink

To JP:
The animal shelter that I bought him from spay and neuter pets before the public purchase them. I just have an appt. to go to a vet to see if his stiches have fallen out yet or do they need to be taken out. The shelter not the vet stiched him up.
