morign all -

our first experiences of fireworks were not too goo dlast night Sad obviously Toby's hearing is much better than ours and he went absolutely mental while we were all watching tv - hackles up, barking, teeth out, basically very agitated and upset. We didn't know what had caused it but let him out into the garden as we thought he might have heard someone out there or something though we couldn't see anything. We managed to calm him down and then half an hour later all hell broke loose!! Mad firework display by a house a couple of dorrs down!! Toby went even more menatl. We popped his lead on and took him out the front so he could see that it was nothing to be afraid of etc - managed to calm him down. Outside, I don't know if he was trying to get away from the noise or if he just wanted to go for a walk but he was definitely walking away from the sound...

Am gonna get a cd today with firework noises on to get him used to it, but what should we do in that situation? We tried to stay calm once we knew what the problem was but we seriously had no idea!? poor toby Sad

Sorry edited to say that we didn't put him in his crate cos we didn't know if that was the wrong thig to do or not - as he feels safe and snuggly in there - should we just do that?

xx

I would do absolutely nothing....I would pretend I was completely deaf and didn't hear the noises at all. If he prefers to sit in his crate, then let him but I wouldn't put him in there purposely. If he wants to go in the garden then let him....if he runs and hides, then let him....Don't try to calm him down, or show him the fireworks or anything. If you make any sort of fuss of him, then it is just confirming in his mind that there is something to be afraid of.

I tend to pretend that fireworks are as much part of daily life as breathing...so they are no big deal.... and if they do start to bark at the noise then they get told firmly "that's enough!!!" same as I would if they barked manically at the door bell. Wink
